Years of observation and study have indicated that one such trait or a set of traits does not make an extraordinary leader. What scholars have been able to arrive at is that leadership traits of an individual do not change from situation to situation; such traits include intelligence, assertiveness, or physical attractiveness. However, each key trait may be applied to situations differently, depending on the circumstances. The following summarizes the main leadership traits found in research by Jon P. Howell, business professor at New Mexico State University and author of the book Snapshots of Great Leadership.

Lose with dignity. Leaders should be seen as mature – not as crybabies. If the other team kicked your butt, congratulate them without wincing. With your good attitude, you’ll get another chance at them.
Be personal and share lessons: Help your team avoid mistakes by sharing with them the lessons you’ve learned that got you to where you are. Never be afraid to give constructive feedback. Teaching is not only valuable for the one learning the lesson, but also helps you hone leadership skills through communicating and connecting.
Don’t let failure define you. When asked about his 10,000 failed attempts to develop a storage battery, the prolific American inventor Thomas Edison responded: “I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
A boss may think that their time is more valuable than their team’s, which may result in them tending to be long winded, scheduling endless meetings and requiring tedious follow up. A leader usually recognizes that everyone’s time is valuable, and may try to make sure that no one has to wait unnecessarily for them or for valuable information. They may be good at setting priorities so their team can be the most productive they can be. Leaders may also realize that their team members have a life and don’t expect them to work 24/7.
5. Excellent persuasion abilities. People have to believe in you and your credibility. Image is everything and the belief people have in you, your product, your mission, your facts or your reputation are key to being a great leader. You have to persuade people of this — it doesn’t just happen.
Put in the work up front. I always say that if you put in 10x the work that leads to 1000x the results. So don’t slack or half-ass your way through assignments or projects. Focus on becoming world class and absorbing all the knowledge you can from them.
But leadership really isn’t about a particular position or a person’s seniority. Just because someone has worked for many years doesn’t mean he has gained the qualities and skills to lead a team.
