In order to be a truly effective leader, you need to take stock of your personal characteristics and skill sets and assess your strengths and weaknesses. Further education in leadership and management coupled with continued professional development of your skills are key. In this age of digital enlightenment and rapidly evolving workplaces, the definition of effective leadership is constantly evolving and to keep up, leaders need to continuously ask questions of themselves.
Discuss your experience. Without showing off, let your employees understand how long you’ve been in the business and what you have achieved while you were there. Not only will they have a better understanding of why you’re sitting in the boss’ chair, but they’ll be more excited to be a part of your team and will admire you.

Don’t change your instructions in the middle of a project. Though some adjustments in the workplace are necessary, it’s important to not only be clear about your expectations, but to also be consistent. If you change your mind about what you want halfway through a meeting, your employees may not take you seriously, or they might be frustrated.
Lower self-confidence makes you pay attention to critical feedback and helps you be more self-critical. If you’re convinced you’re God’s gift to engineering, you probably won’t be receptive to feedback. Nor will you be able to criticize yourself effectively. Successful people do exactly that.

Just because someone has worked for many years doesn’t mean he has gained the qualities and skills to lead a team.  Getting promoted to a managerial position doesn’t automatically turn you into a leader.
