What most people do: Wing it. They make a list of the reasons why they should get a raise — why they DESERVE it — and then they practice what they’re going to say in their heads a few times. They think the fact that they’ve done great will be enough.
Leaders recognize their need to attract followers. Followership is key to understanding leadership. To follow, people must feel confident in the direction in which the leader is headed. The biggest problem is that people major in minor things, they learn a little bit of this and that, go to school, waste some time working a job they hate (some even waste their whole life), and while they’re on the train to the land of misery they also tend to settle for a partner they don’t truly love.

In the scientific community especially, it isn’t enough for a manager to have only broad, general knowledge. We need our managers to have expert professional knowledge and judgement in their field, so they can have a deep understanding of the problems at hand and the ability to develop ideas and solutions to address those problems. It’s then their responsibility to utilize their management skills and deploy new methods that find solutions.
There are people who are less accomplished in their personal and professional life, and there are people who are more accomplished than us. If you spend time with those who are behind you, your average will go down, and with it, your success.
Leaders with humility recognize that they are no better or worse than other members of the team. A humble leader is not self-effacing but rather tries to elevate everyone. Leaders with humility also understand that their status does not make them a god. Mahatma Gandhi is a role model for Indian leaders, and he pursued a “follower-centric” leadership role.

A good boss also recognizes the importance of regular feedback. Acknowledge team members when they have successfully navigated an issue, and talk about what they did right. It depends on how you define better. Ralph is moral. Jack is savage, savvy and strong, he gets the upper hand. So is leadership defined by who is better qualified to lead? The success the leader has, or the moral character that the leader exemplifies?
Most of these traits tie directly into emotional intelligence (EQ). Leaders with high EQ are intrinsically more self aware. They understand their mental processes and know how to direct themselves. They’re more in touch with what they’re deeply passionate about. They naturally care more for others and receive more compassion in return. They’re more socially in tune.

To become a good leader, you must have all these qualities but if you lack some of these qualities, then you might struggle to make the mark in the world of leadership. You will have to set a good example for others to follow. That is where your commitment, passion, empathy, honesty and integrity come into play. Good communication skills and decision-making capabilities also play a vital role in success and failure of a leader. Lastly, innovation and creative thinking, as well as the futuristic vision, are a couple of key traits which make a leader stand out.
One of the greatest advantages introverts have is their ability to stay focused, where others around them might be distracted. They’re generally not afraid of solitude because they know it’s fruitful. It gives them opportunities for self-reflection, thinking, theorizing, observing, planning or imagining, not to mention reading, researching and writing. Our culture discourages time alone, but in our noisy world, with its many distractions, we can get an edge if we carve out some time for solitude. It helps to minimize distractions and aids in staying more focused. It improves our ability to think. Introverts can teach us a lot in that regard.
