Organization is also useful for the leader him/herself because it allows that person to keep track of their expectations and whether or not their subordinates have followed through on them. Here’s an example story of poor leadership: An airline’s forks kept disappearing and no one knew why. After an investigation, it was discovered the dishwashers were throwing them away because they had trouble with adequately cleaning them and they were scared of punishment if they returned dirty forks (and would thusly be reprimanded).[1] If you’re too dictatorial, your team will throw away your forks. There is no question that some people are intrinsically more drawn towards leadership roles than others. However, it would be nonsense to suggest—although this has been mooted in the past—that only people with certain physical or personal traits could lead. For example, it has clearly been proven that being male, or being tall, does not of itself make someone a better leader, although many leaders are both male and tall.
The danger of this kind of thinking is obvious when you consider some of the examples Brown features: Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and Mao. Though their stories are notorious, it’s well worth reading Brown’s insightful analysis of each man’s rise and reign.
Leadership is the timeless practice of guiding others in pursuit of a goal, destination or desired outcome. At the most fundamental level, a leader is someone who motivates, inspires and guides others toward pre-established goals.
Some might say Hitler was a good leader as he lead millions of people to think in the same distorted way as he did but ultimately it was not the right direction for the German’s to go and he killed himself.
1. Lead by example. Any attempt to rule with an iron fist will go down like a lead balloon – after all, your coworkers don’t report to you. The best way to motivate your colleagues is to set the example of how you expect others to approach the project. If you’re enthusiastic, they’ll be enthusiastic. If you snipe and make snide remarks, so will they. Even if you’re inwardly grumbling about the extra pressure and workload, avoid complaining around your teammates.
Balance your life. It is important to remember that even as you work hard you should take some time to have fun. There is time for everything; set a time to have fun and never neglect your family and friends. It is also important to remember that you should get the work done first, and then have fun.
A third characteristic of great leaders–or, perhaps, group of characteristics–is having courage, tenacity, and patience. Having the courage to stand alone, the tenacity to not succumb to pressure, and the patience to keep fighting until you win the day–and sometimes being able to do all three at the same time–is something you will have to develop if you want to be a true and successful leader.
The last one is the LEADER. He ensures that no one is left behind. He keeps the pack unified and on the same path. He is always ready to run in any direction to protect & serves as the ‘bodyguard’ to the entire group.
