The 34th President of United States, Dwight.D.Eisenhower once said, “The supreme quality of leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.” Honesty and integrity are two important ingredients which make a good leader. How can you expect your followers to be honest when you lack these qualities yourself? Leaders succeed when they stick to their values and core beliefs and without ethics, this will not be possible.
If you really want to know what people think, just ask them. You may receive feedback that you’re not listening or showing appreciation as well as you could be. If you’ve established an environment of honest and open communication, you should be able to ask about your good qualities and the areas you need to improve on. Your staff will appreciate your effort.
Through my work in the business world and at the foundation, I’ve seen firsthand how ineffective and even dangerous it can be when leaders make decisions alone—and how much good we can do when we work together. Then it becomes a stepping stone instead of a failure.” As you continue exploring how to achieve success, and what success means to you personally, never be afraid to start over and switch up what you’re doing. The path to personal growth is long and ever-changing. Although you can trust that success doesn’t mean the same thing for any two people, you can rest easily knowing no one finds success without effort.
It is no coincidence that both lists begin with heart. Like Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, a leader cannot achieve greatness without showing deep empathy with his or her people – a sentiment that fuels the fight against the injustices those people may face.

Leadership doesn’t have a one size fits all solution, and there is no magic formula that will instantly make you a great leader. Situational theory also appeared as a reaction to the trait theory of leadership. Social scientists argued that history was more than the result of intervention of great men as Carlyle suggested. Herbert Spencer (1884) (and Karl Marx) said that the times produce the person and not the other way around.[40] This theory assumes that different situations call for different characteristics; according to this group of theories, no single optimal psychographic profile of a leader exists. First things first, take a minute and spend some time thinking about how you behave under stressful situations. What is your preferred leadership style? Do you ask others for their opinions? Do you tell everyone what to do and how you expect them to do it? Do you lead from the front? Do you worry about where your team is headed and whether there is a clear vision ahead? You’ll gain great insight into your preferred style of leadership by taking a few minutes to introspectively think about these questions.

Establish expectations for appropriate behavior. Make it clear that you expect your children to avoid foul language, have dinner at the dinner table, and to maintain a positive attitude when possible. Repeating these rules and others early and often will show your children that you have clear rules for what is and is not acceptable in your home.
Not everyone will be happy for you and your success. Some people are insecure and jealous. Be prepared for them, and look past them until you find the people who are happy for you and who support you in all that you do.

Lead, don’t follow. Leading the way can be dangerous. You’re taking on the headwinds literally, perhaps, or you’re banking on an idea — like Facebook or Google — that someone has already tried before. Summon up the courage to do something different.
Look at what the numbers are telling you. Did you ever have an idea about something but were afraid that the numbers (i.e. metrics) wouldn’t back it up? That fear is normal, but it’s a good idea to let the numbers give you guidance. Better to be wrong and adapt than to stubbornly insist you’re doing it right when the numbers don’t back that up.
Leaders and managers both need to understand how to build and manage a team. They need to know how to recruit effectively, and bring people ‘on board’ through induction processes. They also need to understand the importance of performance management, both on a regular basis, and to manage poor performance.

You must know your reasons for wanting to learn how to become successful and achieve your goals. This is the only way you can persevere when the going gets tough and achieve your goals. When things get challenging, reflect on what caused you to pursue this path in the first place. Were you conventionally successful but internally unhappy? Have you not utilized your skills as much as you would like to? Are you trying to become a more well-rounded individual? Part of a leader’s remit is to set bold goals. They could take years to achieve, but they need to be specific enough that everyone in the organisation understands them, buys into them and is willing to work together to achieve them. Bold must also mean achievable.

Dissatisfied with the results of most organizations helping the urban poor in the mid-1990s, Canada launched an experiment, an effort to reach all the kids in a 24-block zone of New York City — he called it the Harlem Children’s Zone — and give them education, social, and medical help starting at birth. I have found the most effective managers to have varying amounts of the following three components, typically beginning with specific and deep domain expertise and morphing into motivation and organizational skills as they get more senior.

This leadership definition captures the essentials of being able to inspire others and being prepared to do so. Effective leadership is based upon ideas (whether original or borrowed), but won’t happen unless those ideas can be communicated to others in a way that engages them enough to act as the leader wants them to act.
Enjoy the present moment. If you are constantly dwelling on the past or daydreaming about the future, you are missing out on the present moment. Remember that the past and the future are simply illusions, and that real life takes place here and now.
Don’t do everything yourself. Great leaders, such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Virgin mogul Richard Branson, surround themselves with talented individuals who can offer their own solutions. Set the vision and determine the goals, but trust people to make it happen. Tolerance is good; indecisiveness is bad. Communicate the vision for the future and if things need changing, tell people and involve them in making the changes. That makes me think of a story I heard many years ago for which I don’t remember the source. It was about a steel worker who found his job very un-motivating. Day after day, he loaded beams of steel onto trucks. Then one day, after another hard day, he listened to the space shuttle lunch on the news. Much to his surprise, it was mentioned that the steel used to build the space shuttle was coming from the steel plant that he was working in. Needless to say, he was quite happy to brag to everyone in the room that he was the one who loaded those beams of steel onto the truck to be delivered. If his superior would have taken a few minutes to explain what the steel was being used for, perhaps he would have changed his perception and would have been extremely proud of his efforts, as little as they were, in helping to build a space shuttle.

The feeling of being appreciated and loved leads to an everlasting change in the human body. Every one of us wants to be loved. Without being loved we want to feel appreciated. In lack of appreciation we seek to be appreciated through fear. And if our attempts of getting ourselves feared fails? We aim to get ourselves hated.
In contrast to individual leadership, some organizations have adopted group leadership. In this so-called shared leadership, more than one person provides direction to the group as a whole. It is furthermore characterized by shared responsibility, cooperation and mutual influence among the team members.[98] Some organizations have taken this approach in hopes of increasing creativity, reducing costs, or downsizing. Others may see the traditional leadership of a boss as costing too much in team performance. In some situations, the team members best able to handle any given phase of the project become the temporary leaders. Additionally, as each team member has the opportunity to experience the elevated level of empowerment, it energizes staff and feeds the cycle of success.[99]
Leaders can also motivate and influence people through their natural charisma and appeal, and through other sources of power  , such as the power to pay bonuses or assign tasks to people. However, good leaders don’t rely too much on these types of power to motivate and inspire others.

12. Bond with your team. It’s easy for people to talk about wanting great teams, but that doesn’t happen by itself. It takes a leader who’s willing to get in the trenches and spend time working with their team to create the bond that great teams share.
You need to understand what your strengths and weaknesses are. And more importantly you need to have the desire to constantly improve upon them. Being open-minded and consistently seeking formal and informal feedback will do much to help you in your improvement efforts.
Try new things. Take some risk. Make yourself uncomfortable. Do the things that may risk making you look foolish – what do you have to lose? Leaders take risks. They are not afraid of doing what they believe.
Leaders also need to make sure they manage change  effectively. This helps to ensure that the changes needed to deliver the vision are implemented smoothly and thoroughly, with the support and backing of the people affected.
1.3.1. We want immediate results when we start something new. But life isn’t like that. When we start something new, we experience the principle of lag. This means that there is a period of time before action shows results
It is truly wonderful to meet a listener that is good. The first time I met the CEO of one of our clients, he really impressed me with his unbelievably great listening skills. Don’t burn bridges along the way. A lot of life is about personal relationships, so don’t forsake them. If you’ve invented a cheap, efficient way to make nuclear fission, but everyone dislikes you, you have no spouse, and no friends, will it be worth it?
