The “how to be a better leader” test: When was the last time you praised an employee? If it wasn’t this week, you may be a boss. Taking time to praise an employee for a job well-done may help you become a better leader.
Listen. To be an effective leader, one must listen to what those around you are saying, and then make a decision on what you have heard. To listen is very difficult, but one must, because the lowest of the low person in your business may say something that is effective and very important, something that you never have thought of. So… learn to listen carefully, and when everyone has had their say, only then make a decision.
It’s better to be respected than loved. As human beings, we have a natural tendency to want to be loved. But what happens when your desire to be loved interferes with your ability to lead? Effective leaders recognize it is more important to be respected by their people than adored. They make the tough decisions that are needed to secure the future of those around them, including their direct reports.

[…] if our civilisation is to survive, we must break with the habit of deference to great men. Great men may make great mistakes; and […] some of the greatest leaders of the past supported the perennial attack on freedom and reason. Listening is the foundation of any good relationship. Great leaders listen to what their customers and prospects want and need, and they listen to the challenges those customers face. They listen to colleagues and are open to new ideas. They listen to shareholders, investors, and competitors. Here’s why the best CEO’s listen more.

A great leader is one who successfully serves the people he/she is supposed to lead. Period. Success will be dependent upon circumstances and opportunities. What does not make them a great leader: serving self interest, ducking responsibity, enriching themselves, not caring for their people, blindness for reality.
What’s particularly helpful here is when leaders have expert power . People admire and believe in these leaders because they are expert in what they do. They have credibility, and they’ve earned the right to ask people to listen to them and follow them. This makes it much easier for these leaders to motivate and inspire the people they lead.
Here’s one that proved to be a major detriment. If I could go back, I’d promote people a little more slowly because there were times when the person was not ready. By waiting, I could have mentored that individual more and trained him or her on how to handle the added responsibility.
When researching leadership style models, it can get quite confusing as to which ones to apply. Leadership models may vary in the names they use to describe each of their styles and in the quantity of styles they offer, and this can get quite baffling.
“Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone, and as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
It’s true that a woman can take part in a man’s success, just as it’s true that she can take part in his failure. Not just a woman that a man is in a relationship with, but a man’s closest friends will all influence his outcomes. For anyone who truly desires success it’s crucial to have the right kind of people around. Select the right people to be around you as this will help you in life.
Within weeks of her diagnosis in 1996, Giusti began disrupting the myeloma research culture — getting isolated doctors and scientists to share data, and building an unheard-of consortium to develop drugs. Harvard Business School Dean Nitin Nohria calls her “an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word — someone who sees beyond existing constraints to imagine novel solutions to once intractable problems.”
Try new things. Take some risk. Make yourself uncomfortable. Do the things that may risk making you look foolish – what do you have to lose? Leaders take risks. They are not afraid of doing what they believe.
In a science-based organization, every member needs to be comfortable with the fact that there will always be new discoveries made. And because both the business and science sides of the company are about growth, each manager must realize that new ideas, methods, and processes will continue to unfold. There is no finish line. The way things are done now is not the way they will always be done in the future. Problems not solved today will be solved tomorrow.
Instead, focus on one small change you can make today, and watch as that impact reverberates through the rest of your year. You don’t need it to be January to make a change, and there’s no time like the present.
Confidence can be had in any situation. Imagine saying, “I don’t know the answer,” while looking down, thumbs twiddling, and your legs fidgeting. Now imagine saying, “I don’t know the answer,” with your head up, your shoulders back, and looking the speaker in the eye. Not knowing something is fine — just be confident that you don’t know it! A lack of knowledge has nothing to do with your confidence (or ability to lead).
Not everyone will be happy for you and your success. Some people are insecure and jealous. Be prepared for them, and look past them until you find the people who are happy for you and who support you in all that you do.
