When I ask most small-business owners if they are a leader or a boss, they typically reply very quickly with “both.” Yet some less-experienced owners may simply be bosses at their companies because they’re largely focused on telling their team exactly what to do. The opposite of success is failure as it means to fail while trying to achieve aims or objectives. Besides this regular definition of failure it also can be said that even wealthy and successful persons fail in their lives. Just think about the rich and famous and all their scandals, addictions and suicides. All of them were extraordinary persons but a lot of them were also extremely unhappy with their lives and were not able to see the meaning of success. Wealth cannot be defined with money, but instead with values in your life that make you a happy person, such as friendship, relationships and your family.

Far too many bosses communicate far too little. It’s often difficult for busy business owners and executives to keep their employees up-to-date on the latest organizational news. Regardless, you must make every effort to get employees the information they need to do their jobs quickly and efficiently.

At the same time, don’t be too chatty or social with your employees. It’s healthy to make friends in the workplace, but if all you’re doing is chatting everyone up at the watercooler, people may think you’re more focused on gaining approval than being a good leader.

But you can only lead if other people are prepared to follow. That means you have to win and retain their respect, not just for your position but for you as a person, for your experience, skills and competence. A leader has to have a strong rapport with, and understanding of, the organisation and the people he or she is leading: what they want, and what they accept if they can’t have what they want. Emotional intelligence and intuition are important in forming these links.

Part of a leader’s remit is to set bold goals. They could take years to achieve, but they need to be specific enough that everyone in the organisation understands them, buys into them and is willing to work together to achieve them. Bold must also mean achievable.

As Pathfinders, leaders are expected to continually change or renew that part of the organisation for which they are responsible, working on ways to make things better, more effective, or different. Pathfinding calls for taking followers to a place they would not go by themselves.

Democratic leaders work best when team members are experienced and have strong knowledge in their functional area. Inexperienced members may be confused under such leadership, or wondered why their voice was sought after despite their lack of experience.

Successful people know this. They invest an immense amount of time on a daily basis to develop a growth mindset, acquire new knowledge, learn new skills and change their perception so that it can benefit their lives.

Noticing your results is critical to unlocking how to be successful, because you must accurately assess your progress. Are the things you’re doing leading you closer to your goal? Have you hit a plateau as far as progress is concerned? I have learned over the years that a big success on a team is something to cherish and relish when it happens. Explain that your coach is looking out for your team’s best interests. Show your teammates that your coach knows his stuff and should be trusted. This will keep your team strong and will make you look like a fair leader.

4. Engagement. Great business leaders are able to get all members of their teams engaged. They do this by offering them challenge, seeking their ideas and contributions and providing them with recognition for their contributions.

Use technology, don’t let it use you. The Michigan State Studies, which were conducted in the 1950s, made further investigations and findings that positively correlated behaviors and leadership effectiveness. Although they similar findings as the Ohio State studies, they did contribute an additional behavior identified in leaders. This was participative behavior; allowing the followers to participate in group decision making and encouraged subordinate input. Another term used to describe this is “Servant Leadership”, which entails the leader to reject a more controlling type of leadership and allow more personal interaction between themselves and their subordinates.[36]

Confidence can be had in any situation. Imagine saying, “I don’t know the answer,” while looking down, thumbs twiddling, and your legs fidgeting. Now imagine saying, “I don’t know the answer,” with your head up, your shoulders back, and looking the speaker in the eye. Not knowing something is fine — just be confident that you don’t know it! A lack of knowledge has nothing to do with your confidence (or ability to lead).

Ask for feedback. It’s important to ask for feedback after you’ve wrapped up a project, set up guidelines during a meeting, or you have thrown a charity event. You can do this without scaring your employees. Simply ask through email, or send an anonymous survey to them.

Have good manners. An individual should always show respect to other people and distinguish oneself as a lady or gentleman. As a famous Jamaican proverb goes, “Manners carry you through the world and back without a penny.”

Maybe you can show them that you are worthy of there respect. You could show them that you are smart enough, and/or you could show them that you are strong enough and let them know that they can trust you.

Most people like surprises in their day-to-day lives. Likeable leaders underpromise and overdeliver, assuring that customers and staff are surprised in a positive way. There are a plethora of ways to surprise without spending extra money – a smile, We all like to be delighted — surprise and delight create incredible word-of-mouth marketing opportunities.

Leaders know that patience is not about waiting around for results, it’s about following through and executing the plan, not giving up when you face hurdles, working hard and learning how to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

The downside of regular coaching is that it’s time-consuming. It also takes patience to coach each of the team members. In an organization that focuses on immediate results, coaching is not preferred because it takes time to see significant results.

Openness means being able to listen to new ideas, even if they do not conform to the usual way of thinking. Good leaders are able to suspend judgment while listening to others’ ideas, as well as accept new ways of doing things that someone else thought of. Openness builds mutual respect and trust between leaders and followers, and it also keeps the team well supplied with new ideas that can further its vision.

Above all, leadership is a people job. When an employee needs to talk with you–whatever the reason–make sure that you set aside the time to do so. Put your work aside for a moment, put down your smartphone, and focus on the person standing in front of you.

Providing time to plan with other teachers is another way principals can support their teachers and treat them as professionals. One of the first changes Principal Chiu made at Galileo was to change the school day schedule to allow time each week for teachers to meet and plan together. Adelina Aramburo, former principal at Daniel Webster Elementary School, made sure her school’s tight budget included a few hours of extra pay each month for teachers. She believes this showed teachers that the time they spent meeting and planning together outside their official work day was recognized and appreciated.

Identify potential mentors who have similar values, then have casual meetings with them to find the one with whom you have good rapport. Be prepared to explain what you hope to learn, why you value their insight and expertise, and what you bring to the relationship.

HBS professor Joe Badaracco agrees that the traditional manager versus leader argument (“Clark Kent versus Superman,” he jokes) tends to undermine the value of management. “There are lots of people who look and act like managers, who have excellent managerial skills, and who don’t make a lot of noise. Nobody is writing cover stories about them. But after they have been in an organization for a period of time, things are significantly better,” observes Badaracco. “Now, are these mere managers because we can’t compare them with Martin Luther King? Or are they leaders because they accomplished something that needed to be done?”

Take time to educate yourself and become qualified. Never assume that you learn as much on the job. In this global economy, those wishing to succeed must have the necessary tools to be successful, and that includes having an education.

“It always comes down to incentives. What’s the incentive for someone to behave differently? Is it recognition, time, or more money? No. It’s usually visibility,” he said. “When you give a speech, you’ll be scored by the audience.”

Bosses may expect big results because they pay employees, while leaders offer immediate praise, thanks and constructive criticism (when appropriate) as it happens. They may realize that team members are rewarded by other incentives in addition to money. Leaders may make time to pause and celebrate employees’ wins individually or as a company.

Probably the most difficult job for a leader is to persuade others to follow. It can only be possible if you inspire your followers by setting a good example. When the going gets tough, they look up to you and see how you react to the situation. If you handle it well, they will follow you. As a leader, should think positive and this positive approach should be visible through your actions. Stay calm under pressure and keep the motivation level up. As John Quincy Adams puts it, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” If you are successful in inspiring your subordinates, you can easily overcome any current and future challenge easily.

A variety of leadership behaviors are expected to facilitate these functions. In initial work identifying leader behavior, Fleishman (1953) observed that subordinates perceived their supervisors’ behavior in terms of two broad categories referred to as consideration and initiating structure. Consideration includes behavior involved in fostering effective relationships. Examples of such behavior would include showing concern for a subordinate or acting in a supportive manner towards others. Initiating structure involves the actions of the leader focused specifically on task accomplishment. This could include role clarification, setting performance standards, and holding subordinates accountable to those standards.

There’s a tendency in any job to do the easiest tasks first. Duh! They are the easiest! It’s always nice to look like we’re getting more done each week and clearing up our time for the harder challenges in the workplace. In leadership, that’s a big mistake. That troublemaker on your team? The drop in sales after a marketing snafu? A big tax change? Address those problems first to free up your time to lead better the rest of the week.

Whether in fact a person is born a leader or develops skills and abilities to become a leader is open for debate. There are some clear characteristics that are found in good leaders. These qualities can be developed or may be naturally part of their personality. Let us explore them further.

Finally, the ability and willingness to change your approach allows you to reach even the highest goals. No great success was achieved without any effort, or in only one try. Thomas Edison said: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Tony feels the same way: “I have plenty of failures, but I don’t look at them that way, not because I am in denial but because I make myself learn something from it. Then it becomes a stepping stone instead of a failure.” As you continue exploring how to achieve success, and what success means to you personally, never be afraid to start over and switch up what you’re doing. The path to personal growth is long and ever-changing. Although you can trust that success doesn’t mean the same thing for any two people, you can rest easily knowing no one finds success without effort.

3. Care. The strongest, most effective leaders I’ve met care not just about the business, but about the people in it and the people impacted by it. Plus, they show they care through their words and actions, even proving how they care for themselves and their family by taking unplugged vacations and continuing their own professional development. Care shouldn’t be a four-letter word in our workplace today — and the best leaders know it.

Consult. Have the confidence to recognize when and where you might not have the right answer. If you believe your team may know best, invite discussion and ask the right questions. You are looking to support your team and encourage to take greater responsibility for future action.

The potential downsides are in situations where a clear decision needs ot be made or if an employee takes advantage of the kind nature of the leader. This is why hiring the right people is so important.

Kishore Mahbubani and Klaus Schwab name a few leaders who exemplify the qualities of great leadership. Five elements – heart, brain, muscle, nerve, and soul – are key for Schwab, while compassion, canniness, and courage as well as the ability to identify talent and understand complexity are essential for Mahbubani. They say extraordinary circumstances, like the ones we are facing, could give rise to “heroic leaders.”

Equally important was a strong set of genuine organisational values. At one charity, people knew and shared the same values and ethics which empowered them to challenge any instances of transgression. We also found that having clear and widely-understood policies and processes around whistleblowing reassured people that the organisation took ethics seriously. Even though not all people identified with the charity’s specific religious heritage, they were still invigorated by the ethical code displayed by the leaders.

Becoming a prosperous, accomplished person means pursuing your personal goals with tenacity. Build upon your small successes, each and every day. Visualize the next step you need to take that will bring you closer to your goals.

Control. At the beginning of a team’s life or your tenure as the team leader, when you do not yet have the insight into the team’s capabilities, the right approach is to exert authority and control. It is far easier to start tight and loosen control as needed.

Everyone has qualities that leaders possess, but not everyone encounters the exact set of circumstances in life where those qualities can really shine and be recognized. Everyone can, however, develop their leadership qualities and put them to positive use in life every day, in and out of the workplace.

In-group members are perceived by the leader as being more experienced, competent, and willing to assume responsibility than other followers. The leader begins to rely on these individuals to help with especially challenging tasks. If the follower responds well, the leader rewards him/her with extra coaching, favorable job assignments, and developmental experiences. If the follower shows high commitment and effort followed by additional rewards, both parties develop mutual trust, influence, and support of one another. Research shows the in-group members usually receive higher performance evaluations from the leader, higher satisfaction, and faster promotions than out-group members.[61] In-group members are also likely to build stronger bonds with their leaders by sharing the same social backgrounds and interests.

The affective tone of the group. Group affective tone represents the consistent or homogeneous affective reactions within a group. Group affective tone is an aggregate of the moods of the individual members of the group and refers to mood at the group level of analysis. Groups with leaders in a positive mood have a more positive affective tone than do groups with leaders in a negative mood.[64]

Last but certainly not the least, is empathy. Leaders should develop empathy with their followers. Unfortunately, most leaders follow a dictatorial style and neglect empathy altogether. Due to this, they fail to make a closer connection with their followers. Understanding the problems of your followers and feeling their pain is the first step to become an effective leader. Even that is not enough until you work hard and provide your followers with the suitable solution to their problems.

No matter the situation, showing the person you are working with that you are on the same team can go a long way. If they come to you with an issue, take a moment to see things from their point of view. Maybe they have someone above them breathing down their neck. Maybe they have a lot on their plate. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, a series of qualitative reviews of these studies (e.g., Bird, 1940;[14] Stogdill, 1948;[15] Mann, 1959[16]) prompted researchers to take a drastically different view of the driving forces behind leadership. In reviewing the extant literature, Stogdill and Mann found that while some traits were common across a number of studies, the overall evidence suggested that persons who are leaders in one situation may not necessarily be leaders in other situations. Subsequently, leadership was no longer characterized as an enduring individual trait, as situational approaches (see alternative leadership theories below) posited that individuals can be effective in certain situations, but not others. The focus then shifted away from traits of leaders to an investigation of the leader behaviors that were effective. Care about your followers. Just because they are not leaders doesn’t mean they are idiots. They’ll be able to tell if you’re compassionate and genuinely concerned for them. And if you’re not, they’ll chuck you off your pedestal. Remember who butters your bread! Without them, you have no one to lead and are a leader no longer.

They need to know why the organization is pursuing the current strategies. They need their leader for guidance and to help remove any barriers they may experience along the way. Mostly, they need the assurance that their leader has confidence in their ability to perform and produce the desired outcomes.

There is little point having a leader incapable of making a decision, even if it turns out to be the wrong one. Being indecisive can undermine confidence and trust. Leaders must lead, take a chance and make a decision based on the facts to hand. This is the core skill of any successful leader. Gordon Brown as prime minister lost much of the confidence of his close allies when he failed to decide to call a general election in 2007 that he could have won with ease. A lack of decision making and clarity of purpose will lead to a rapid loss of support and credibility.

Your greatest goal in life and in personal success should be to acquire as many of them as possible and then use them to help you do the things you want to do and become the person you want to become.

It is not enough that people are motivated to succeed at work. They have to work together as a team to accomplish the group’s objective. After all, if we just want them to all “do their own thing” we don’t need you as a manager to mold them into a team, do we? Here are some ways to improve your team building skills:

Leaders do this by staying true to our second theme, which is to stay motivated and motivate others. Have you ever seen a true leader who wasn’t always ‘on’? Me either. Ever seen a true leader who wasn’t inspiring those around them, no matter how challenging the task? Neither have I. Now this doesn’t mean that leaders are unnaturally hyperactive Pollyanna’s. Most great leaders I have known are exhausted at the end of the day. Many are concerned and even stressed about how best to lead their teams to the desired goals. They’re honest with their teams when they have such concerns, but they don’t get bogged down with worry and doubt. Instead they focus on finding the solutions, and they do so with zeal.

People learn by doing, and letting staff work things out for themselves and make their own mistakes is part of growing as a person and an employee. Times may be tough and change may be complex to cope with, but if the boss wants maximum energy behind the mission then don’t wrap them in cotton wool and don’t let them hide behind processes. The “computer says no” culture is holding back many large organisations.

Although leaders may be born with qualities that make them effective at influencing others, good leaders are always learning. Good leaders involve themselves in accountability groups, attend leadership conferences and read books that strengthen leadership skills. They may be good at setting priorities so their team can be the most productive they can be. Leaders may also realize that their team members have a life and don’t expect them to work 24/7.

The bureaucratic top-down leadership style i.e. “The Commanding Leader” is increasingly less effective in the ever evolving digital age where people are more connected than ever. Employees want a more collaborative approach to leadership. 41% of employees say they want their leadership to come from the company that they work for as a whole and from all employees. They want a ‘leadership-by-all’ model. This is much more than the 25% who say that leadership should only come from the company CEO, according to the KLCM report. Interestingly, Millennial employees have higher expectations of leadership from CEOs and those in Senior Management. Only 35% of Millennials prefer the ‘leadership-by-all’ model, which is 6% less than the general consensus.

Running the military’s technology innovation lab in the middle of the austerity era is no easy task. But Prabhakar, who first led a major federal office when she was only 34 and later spent time as a venture capitalist, is meeting the challenge with an outsider’s enthusiasm. The validity of the assertion that groups flourish when guided by effective leaders can be illustrated using several examples. For instance, according to Baumeister et al. (1988), the bystander effect (failure to respond or offer assistance) that tends to develop within groups faced with an emergency is significantly reduced in groups guided by a leader.[109] Moreover, it has been documented that group performance,[110] creativity,[111] and efficiency[112] all tend to climb in businesses with designated managers or CEOs. However, the difference leaders make is not always positive in nature. Show your love and affection for your spouse and children. Though you may be an authority figure, you are also a mother or father, and it’s important to tell your children how much you love them, to hug them, and to tell them they’re special every single day.

If you are working closely with a team, use them to your advantage. What roles do they feel best suited for? How is their time being utilized? What ideas do they have that have yet to be implemented? In many cases, growth is a matter of rearranging and refining — not necessarily a problem at all.

Scanning these different approaches, however, there do seem to be some common themes. The first theme is that leaders expect the best from themselves and help others be their best as well. As anyone who ever played high school sports can attest, coaches are always talking about the importance of ‘senior leadership’ on their teams. What they mean by this is having people who lead in both word and deed. Leaders are the first ones on the field and the last ones off. The ones who never quit and won’t let others quit either. Ogbonnia (2007) defines an effective leader “as an individual with the capacity to consistently succeed in a given condition and be viewed as meeting the expectations of an organization or society.” Leaders are recognized by their capacity for caring for others, clear communication, and a commitment to persist.[96] An individual who is appointed to a managerial position has the right to command and enforce obedience by virtue of the authority of their position. However, she or he must possess adequate personal attributes to match this authority, because authority is only potentially available to him/her. In the absence of sufficient personal competence, a manager may be confronted by an emergent leader who can challenge her/his role in the organization and reduce it to that of a figurehead. However, only authority of position has the backing of formal sanctions. It follows that whoever wields personal influence and power can legitimize this only by gaining a formal position in the hierarchy, with commensurate authority.[94] Leadership can be defined as one’s ability to get others to willingly follow. Every organization needs leaders at every level.[97]

You lack motivation not because you are lazy or don’t have a goal. Even the biggest stars, richest businesspeople or the most accomplished athletes get lost sometimes. What makes them motivated is the curiosity about how much better or faster they can get. So above all, be curious, and this will lead you to your goals and success.

If you want to be a leader you have to be prepared to lead. It does require self-confidence. You have to be able to judge when to listen, when to think and when to decide. When you make decisions you need to stick with them through adversity if you are sure they are right, and to see them through. People like continuity. If at some point you conclude that you were wrong, you need to be big enough to change and to explain why. The best solution is to make the right decisions! It is more important to make good decisions than fast decisions.

True leaders are always nurturing and mentoring others on the team, which means letting them take the wheel sometimes. When you allow others to take the lead, you give them a chance to showcase their skills and talent, and you inspire your whole team to bring their best.

In 2011, the median weekly earnings for high school graduates was $638 while those with bachelor’s degrees made $1053. That same year, those with masters or doctoral degrees made $1263 and $1551 respectively.

The principles in this book are not remarkably new and the dictionary definitions at the start of every section seem a little out of place. The tendency for the points to spill into each other was also a little distracting. But the inspiring stories in every section were a nice touch.

Next step after getting rid of negative thoughts is to use your imagination. When things go well, you are full of positive energy, and when you are experiencing difficulties, you need to be even more energetic. So rename your situation. If you keep repeating I hate my work, guess which feelings those words will evoke? It’s a matter of imagination! You can always find something to learn even from the worst boss in the world at the most boring job. I have a great exercise for you: Just for three days, think and say positive things only. See what happens.

This month we choose The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John C. Maxwell as our book club book to learn what it takes to be an effective leader (in and out of the office) from one of the world’s top leadership experts.

It sounds corny, and maybe you can overdo this one, but I honestly believe many employees in young companies need constant encouragement. We live in complex, competitive times and people are inundated with too many tasks and not enough time. Technology and business life can be overwhelming, so it’s important to point out any “wins” no matter how small. And, if you do have to criticize, think seriously about the impact first.

Be fun at team social events. Make sure to show up to team dinners and other social events first and to leave last. Show that you love being a leader of your team from start to finish. This will help you get to know your fellow players and to deepen your bond.

If there is a fire, or a project goes awry, or an employee makes an unsalvageable mistake, the easy thing would be to react with disappointment, anger, or anxiety. Compassion brings the moment back to being human. If you first look at how the people involved feel, you can get a better sense of what you need to do as a leader to repair the situation.

When you realize that you feel guilty about something — like not hitting the gym or saving up for retirement — I want you to just take a moment and acknowledge the feeling. Recognize your guilt and ask yourself what is making you feel guilty. That leads us to…

A team is normally comprised of a number of team members and a team leader. Needless to say, the onus of success lies on the shoulders of the entire team, but the team leader bears most of the burden.

Years ago, after I bought his book, Getting Everything You Can Out of All You’ve Got, I heard he was launching a program for small-business owners. So I applied. After he checked my references and read my application, he offered me a spot.

Don’t focus so hard on your people that you forget about yourself. Identify the areas in which you are weak and improve them. The fact that you are reading this article shows you understand the concept. You need to put it practice.

Whether you consciously aware of it or not, on some level you are continually leading yourself and others – you don’t necessarily have to have a large team reporting to you to be considered a leader and to need effective leadership skills.

A third characteristic of great leaders–or, perhaps, group of characteristics–is having courage, tenacity, and patience. Having the courage to stand alone, the tenacity to not succumb to pressure, and the patience to keep fighting until you win the day–and sometimes being able to do all three at the same time–is something you will have to develop if you want to be a true and successful leader.

For example, when you start a new project, you will probably have lots of enthusiasm for it, so it’s often easy to win support for it at the beginning. However, it can be difficult to find ways to keep your vision inspiring after the initial enthusiasm fades, especially if the team or organization needs to make significant changes in the way that it does things. Leaders recognize this, and they work hard throughout the project to connect their vision with people’s individual needs, goals and aspirations.

Understand your income. When calculating your income, be sure to take into account the federal, state, and social security taxes that will be deducted from your gross pay. Don’t overlook miscellaneous deductions, such as health insurance premiums, savings bonds and loan The resulting number is your net pay, which is what you end up taking home with you.

There has never been a faster-changing marketplace than the one we live in today. Leaders must be flexible in managing changing opportunities and challenges and nimble enough to pivot at the right moment. Stubbornness is no longer desirable to most organizations. Instead, humility and the willingness to adapt mark a great leader.

In contrast to individual leadership, some organizations have adopted group leadership. In this so-called shared leadership, more than one person provides direction to the group as a whole. It is furthermore characterized by shared responsibility, cooperation and mutual influence among the team members.[98] Some organizations have taken this approach in hopes of increasing creativity, reducing costs, or downsizing. Others may see the traditional leadership of a boss as costing too much in team performance. In some situations, the team members best able to handle any given phase of the project become the temporary leaders. Additionally, as each team member has the opportunity to experience the elevated level of empowerment, it energizes staff and feeds the cycle of success.[99]

The good leader has great investigating skills, and the natural instinct to do so. Being more on the skeptical side motivates the good leader to question everything; the Who, What, Where, How and Why of any situation. This line of questioning allows them to not only identify potential strengths and weaknesses, but also why they are present and how they can be resolved.

There were times when I rewarded employees monetarily or with recognition when they finished a task on a project. That’s always expected in the workplace. Yet, by rewarding task completion, I was making a subtle suggestion that I expected employees not to finish things on time. Instead, I should have rewarded them for finding workarounds, thinking creatively, finishing early, and working out of the box.

Selectively lower your confidence.[1] You read it right: lower your confidence. It’s a truism in business that you need to have high self-confidence to get things done. But some people think, and for good reason, that lower self-confidence makes people more successful, for these reasons:

Once you take on a supervisory position, it’s time to trust your team to handle logistics while you focus on the vision and direction of your organization. This shows everyone that you believe in them, boosting their confidence and inspiring them to take more control of their work—which is essential to their own development as well as your progress.

Ask questions. As a leader, you’re sort of untouchable. People may not come to you because you’re the big man of the organization. They don’t want to pipe up and cause a ruckus. Know that you’re dealing with a constant level of perceived intimidation that you need to break down. How do you do this? Ask questions first!

This book, although short, offers very deep and amazing insights to leadership. It began by suggesting the learn your own leadership style, which i think it’s a very important aspect of leadership. What works for one great leader, doesn’t work well for another. Everyone needs to learn how to be themselves—yes, the best version of themselves, and not just follow one dead formula.

Finally, accept that we all make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. When you do, try to learn the lessons, but don’t be destabilised. Someone told me once: “don’t chew the cud”. Keep moving forward, be resilient, remember that things will get better. And smile.

Another important quality of transformational leadership involves a focus on providing one-on-one communication with group members. Good leaders should express sincere care and concern for the members of their group both verbally and nonverbally.

A leader has to be a person capable of juggling many huge demands at a time, they have to consider the opinions, needs, and wants of all around them. They need to be a person not only capable of making difficult decisions, but the right difficult decision. At the same time, they need to know how to look after their team, while pushing them forward to achieve greatness.

Trust other people to do their job. It’s hard to be successful if you don’t trust the people around you. You’re constantly micro-managing everything, leaving yourself spread thin and the others miffed about you not giving them a chance. Being successful is partly about assembling an able team around you. If you can’t trust others enough to let them do their job, you probably won’t succeed at that.

Thoughts influence feelings and feelings determine how you view your work. You have a lot of thoughts in your head, and you always have a choice of which ones to focus on: the ones that will make you emotionally stuck (fears, doubts) or the ones that will move you forward (excitement, experimenting, trying new things, stepping out of your comfort zone).
