I have found the most effective managers to have varying amounts of the following three components, typically beginning with specific and deep domain expertise and morphing into motivation and organizational skills as they get more senior.

Set boundaries with others. Advocate for your own needs. Be caring towards others, but don’t accept abuse from anyone. Remember, being a good person does not mean you have to take violent or disrespectful language or actions from anyone.[11]

We can achieve even the biggest goals as long as we keep the end in mind and keep taking action to get there. No matter how tough things were in the past or our much we struggle in the present, persistence gives us power: “When you meet an obstacle, as you inevitably will, persistence determines what you will do; whether you will give up or keep going. Persistence is what gets you back on your feet, dusted down and ready to go again.”

Contrary to common beliefs, there are no successful or unsuccessful people but instead there are people who have the potential to succeed and who do things that helps them realize this potential and there are people with the same potential who don’t do those things.

If you focus on the excitement of discovery, improving, exploring and experimenting, your motivation will always be fueled. If you focus only on results, your motivation will be like weather—it will die the minute you hit a storm. So the key is to focus on the journey, not the destination. Keep thinking what you are learning along the way and what you can improve.

To have a truly happy and fulfilling life, it’s important to know what’s really important and to develop values around what you can do each and every day to make that world a reality. Sure, many who start a business venture want to achieve a certain level of financial independence. But what does one do with those riches once they finally have them? Those with the attitude that having money means they can buy more “things” to surround themselves with in order to feel superior to others will never be successful in their life. The entrepreneurs who focus on how they can create wealth that can help others and solve problems have the right attitude needed to obtain true happiness and be seen in a positive light by their peers and partners, and are the true embodiment of the word “success”.

For example, if you want to succeed at integrating a healthier lifestyle into your everyday routine, that means you might have drag yourself out to the gym or out for a run when you really don’t feel like it. And in those moments, it won’t feel like you’re doing what you love.

“I think fundamentally leadership is a species of courage,” says Missouri-bred Greitens, a former Navy SEAL and a Rhodes Scholar. “A lot of people approach leadership from a different perspective, but for me a true leader is someone who confronts fear, embraces pain, and welcomes suffering. It’s on the frontline of hardship, pain, and difficulty that leaders really make a difference.” In 2007, Greitens took his commitment back to the frontlines, founding a nonprofit organization that serves post-9/11 veterans by deploying them to service projects across the country. It’s about providing them with “a challenge, not charity,” he says — and changing the way Americans, and the veterans themselves, think about veterans.

The downside of regular coaching is that it’s time-consuming. It also takes patience to coach each of the team members. In an organization that focuses on immediate results, coaching is not preferred because it takes time to see significant results.

Leaders emerge from within the structure of the informal organization. Their personal qualities, the demands of the situation, or a combination of these and other factors attract followers who accept their leadership within one or several overlay structures. Instead of the authority of position held by an appointed head or chief, the emergent leader wields influence or power. Influence is the ability of a person to gain co-operation from others by means of persuasion or control over rewards. Power is a stronger form of influence because it reflects a person’s ability to enforce action through the control of a means of punishment.[94]

Relationship-oriented leadership is a contrasting style in which the leader is more focused on the relationships amongst the group and is generally more concerned with the overall well-being and satisfaction of group members.[89] Relationship-oriented leaders emphasize communication within the group, show trust and confidence in group members, and show appreciation for work done.

5. Start being more disciplined: Discipline gives us the freedom to put all our focus into achieving our goals. But it becomes increasingly harder to be disciplined in a world that is in constant distraction and instant gratification. Sometimes our long- term goals seem to get put off and not made important. discipline is just choosing between what you want now and what you want most. and the truth is anyone who ever made anything important was disciplined.

Let the members of your team know that you welcome their ideas. Leaders who encourage involvement from group members are often referred to as democratic or participative leaders. While they retain the final say over all decisions, they encourage team members to take an active role in coming up with ideas and plans.

Further, a good leader will continually scan for things that are out of their control including changes in their operating environments. When they see a change in their environment that might stop them from achieving their results, they will quickly develop contingency plans to ensure that the things they cannot control do not stop them from meeting or exceeding their targets.

Whether you want it or not, you will be the one who will be followed, you should show always the best of yourself (if you are unstable, you team will be unstable, if you are focused, your team will be focused)

My partner, Howard Morgan, and I conducted an extensive study on leadership development programs involving more than 86,000 participants in eight major corporations. When discussing business leadership, a distinction is often made between good management and good leadership. Managers are thought to be the budgeters, the organizers, the controllers — the ants, as one observer puts it — while leaders are the charismatic, big-picture visionaries, the ones who change the whole ant farm. But such a construction, those interviewed for this article agree, erroneously leads to a bimodal way of looking at something that should really be evaluated on two separate scales. “Everybody has got a little bit of each in them,” says John Kotter, who admits he is sometimes guilty of using the dichotomy in an effort at simplification. “It’s much better to think in terms of measuring people on a zero-to-ten scale for each quality.”

While there are obvious hurdles to face, one of the biggest challenges is in overcoming the fear of jumping into a business in the first place. Most people dream all day about launching a successful business while watching the clock tick at their mundane day jobs. When I quit my job to start my business, I was making double my salary outside my day job than I was inside working my eight hour job. I still had that huge fear of failure.

Success does not come through willpower alone. It takes consistency and determination. Doing something once won’t make a huge difference; it’s when you do that one thing many times over that you can achieve success.

Value experiences over objects. Humans can be extraordinarily obsessed with money. It’s strange, too, because scientists think that our memories of our experiences make us happier than objects we can buy with money.[4] Focus on making great memories with great people along the way, and you should be happy.

The affective tone of the group. Group affective tone represents the consistent or homogeneous affective reactions within a group. Group affective tone is an aggregate of the moods of the individual members of the group and refers to mood at the group level of analysis. Groups with leaders in a positive mood have a more positive affective tone than do groups with leaders in a negative mood.[64]

Individuals with higher intelligence exhibit superior judgement, higher verbal skills (both written and oral), quicker learning and acquisition of knowledge, and are more likely to emerge as leaders.[68] Correlation between IQ and leadership emergence was found to be between .25 and .30.[79] However, groups generally prefer leaders that do not exceed intelligence prowess of average member by a wide margin, as they fear that high intelligence may be translated to differences in communication, trust, interests and values[80]

No one respects a grumpy or negative person. With a positive attitude you are looking at the bright side of life. People are naturally attracted to you when you have a positive attitude. By being positive, you will lead a happier life, as well as be surrounded by other positive people. You will also magically attract exciting offers and possibilities.

Finally, some people contend that if everyone is a leader, who’s going to follow? The truth is, nobody leads in everything. You wouldn’t say that if everyone sings lead vocals, who will sing harmony? The best leaders step in and out of their role as leader gracefully, depending on the situation.

Over the past 13 years working as a journalist, I’ve talked to thousands of company founders, business consultants, and leadership gurus about what it takes to lead a company. Usually, during these interviews and meetups, I’ve nodded in agreement after recognizing the successes and failures during my own corporate tenure.

Integrity is the integration of outward actions and inner values. A person of integrity is the same on the outside and on the inside. Such an individual can be trusted because he or she never veers from inner values, even when it might be expeditious to do so. A leader must have the trust of followers and therefore must display integrity.

Learn from your failures. Each failure is an opportunity to learn. If you make a mistake and refuse to learn, odds are you’ll make that same mistake sometime down the line. If you make a mistake and learn from it, you won’t waste your time making the same mistake again.

Have good manners. An individual should always show respect to other people and distinguish oneself as a lady or gentleman. As a famous Jamaican proverb goes, “Manners you through the world and back without a penny.”

Democratic leadership is good for boosting team morale and improving relationships between leaders and members. An open environment encourages a constant stream of communication and idea exchange. For example, the idea of Gmail was brought to Google decision-makers by a lower-ranking staffer, as was the idea of AdWords. AdWords is a huge revenue driver for Google and it didn’t necessarily begin at the absolute top ranks, but the top ranks weren’t threatened when a new idea came about.

Most people like surprises in their day-to-day lives. Likeable leaders underpromise and overdeliver, assuring that customers and staff are surprised in a positive way. Most theories in the 20th century argued that great leaders were born, not made. Current studies have indicated that leadership is much more complex and cannot be boiled down to a few key traits of an individual. Years of observation and study have indicated that one such trait or a set of traits does not make an extraordinary leader. What scholars have been able to arrive at is that leadership traits of an individual do not change from situation to situation; such traits include intelligence, assertiveness, or physical attractiveness.[91] However, each key trait may be applied to situations differently, depending on the circumstances. The following summarizes the main leadership traits found in research by Jon P. Howell, business professor at New Mexico State University and author of the book Snapshots of Great Leadership.

Functional leadership theory (Hackman & Walton, 1986; McGrath, 1962; Adair, 1988; Kouzes & Posner, 1995) is a particularly useful theory for addressing specific leader behaviors expected to contribute to organizational or unit effectiveness. This theory argues that the leader’s main job is to see that whatever is necessary to group needs is taken care of; thus, a leader can be said to have done their job well when they have contributed to group effectiveness and cohesion (Fleishman et al., 1991; Hackman & Wageman, 2005; Hackman & Walton, 1986). While functional leadership theory has most often been applied to team leadership (Zaccaro, Rittman, & Marks, 2001), it has also been effectively applied to broader organizational leadership as well (Zaccaro, 2001). In summarizing literature on functional leadership (see Kozlowski et al. (1996), Zaccaro et al. (2001), Hackman and Walton (1986), Hackman & Wageman (2005), Morgeson (2005)), Klein, Zeigert, Knight, and Xiao (2006) observed five broad functions a leader performs when promoting organization’s effectiveness. These functions include environmental monitoring, organizing subordinate activities, teaching and coaching subordinates, motivating others, and intervening actively in the group’s work.

Network. Networking is making connections with people who have connections. Contrary to popular belief, networking is mutually beneficial. You offer expertise, opinion, or opportunity to someone in exchange for something back.

Drake has described the song as “eerie” and “dark”, and as “simplistic” having a “reverb-driven harmony.”[3] Shaheem Reid of MTV News said this about the song: “Trey Songz’s hook expresses the dreams of a young black male coming from nothing to something, and Drake’s raps put the hip-hop nation on notice, while conveying his own desperation and hope and revealing family struggles. Join forces with those who have achieved things you want to achieve, or who are on their way to a common goal. Don’t let jealousy get in your way: nobody’s success is a threat to yours.[10]

The most successful organizations often have a mix of these leadership styles for teams and deliverables. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. In our research, we set out to discover what makes an effective leader. We were particularly interested in “purposeful leadership” since a more thoughtful and purposeful approach is often been hailed as the antidote to failings caused by a relentless focus on short-term financial imperatives.

Reaching out to successful people you admire and respect is a wise career strategy. Start hanging out with people who are dependable and reliable, make the relationships around you, people you can admire. Always choose relationship should be based on respect and trust, make sure that their words are matched with actions and deeds. and it means surround yourself by people you admire and respect. Prioritize things. List the things you want to do and those you have to do. Include the time you spend eating, showering, etc. Start your day with something productive, maybe slow things down in the afternoon, and then get back to work or take care of chores in the evening. Gather as much information as you can. Listen. Study. Understand. Learn. Repeat. Humans are amazing creatures because we can look at the world, make intellectual connections, and use those connections to make our lives better (or potentially worse). Picture this – one employee walks into a room and in an upbeat tone of voice you say “thanks for joining us.” Another employee walks into the room 20 minutes late and you say in a regular tone “thanks for joining us.”

Creating a vision is not simply a matter of having an idea. Good strategic thinking must be based on evidence, and that means being able to gather and analyse information from a wide range of sources. This is not purely about numbers, but also about knowing and understanding your market and your customers, and then—and this is crucial—using that information to support your strategic decisions.
Work toward boosting your GPA. Once this is where you’d like it to be, focus on what you’d like to be post-college. Try to gain some experience in field by way of internship, joining related organizations, and reading to stay on top of new developments in the field.
To be an effective leader, you should be confident enough to ensure that other follow your commands. If you are unsure about your own decisions and qualities, then your subordinates will never follow you. As a leader, you have to be oozing with confidence, show some swagger and assertiveness to gain the respect of your subordinates. This does not mean that you should be overconfident, but you should at least reflect the degree of confidence required to ensure that your followers trust you as a leader.

Work on those four fundamental attributes, especially independence (effectoive thinking, decision making, creativity).  If you already have a titled position, then by all means prioritize the people skills.  The most important of these is understanding and managing yourself.  Beyond that, work on: communication, delegation, negotiation, and networking.
Confidence is important because people will be looking to you on how to behave, particularly if things aren’t going 100% right. If you remain calm and poised, team members are far more likely to as well. As a result, morale and productivity will remain high and the problem will be solved more quickly.
Consult. Have the confidence to recognize when and where you might not have the right answer. If you believe your team may know best, invite discussion and ask the right questions. You are looking to support your team and encourage them to take greater responsibility for future action.
15. Stop micromanaging. Leaders who micromanage their teams are not allowing the talented to excel, the gifted to produce, and the experienced to make best use of their skills. If you want to be a better leader, step back and give people the room they need to do their best.
Remember that it is about the entire team. The greatest leaders saw their role to an end, and themselves, as an instrument of a deeper purpose; any glory, prestige, or wealth was a side effect rather than a motivation. After all, nothing would get done with just the efforts of one man. Or woman!

Beyond the leader’s mood, her/his behavior is a source for employee positive and negative emotions at work. The leader creates situations and events that lead to emotional response. Finally, some people contend that if everyone is a leader, who’s going to follow? The truth is, nobody leads in everything. You wouldn’t say that if everyone sings lead vocals, who will sing harmony? The best leaders step in and out of their role as leader gracefully, depending on the situation.
A good leader will often command the attention of an entire room, sometimes without even speaking. This level of presence is not something you just possess from birth. It’s a quality that needs to be earned through the respect of your employees, working hard and being honest at every step of the journey. Presence is often the result of humility in a leader. Acting aloof or superior to employees is likely to cause dislike and disruption, resulting in a negative environment. Instead, a good leader can listen to their employees, talk on their level and gain their trust.
Charisma is certainly helpful, but it’s not essential. There have been many admired leaders in the human history who weren’t the friendliest, most charming of people in the bunch. What was important, however, was that people trusted them, and they were inspired by his or her vision. What you will need is good communication skills (whether it’s through speaking, writing, even art) so you can articulate your vision.
Networking at the highest level is important in providing a fresh  current of resource inputs for the organization, be it talent, ideas,  material inputs, customers, information, markets, and more.  Networking  is not just for, actually, not even primarily for, making sales.  [More  on networking here]
NEVER ask a mentor a question Google can easily answer for you. Do your homework before you ask busy people for answers. If Google could provide the answer in 20 seconds, don’t waste your mentor’s time. You want them to help you solve complex and really meaningful problems in your life instead.
A good leader acts strategically, they craft out a vision and refer constantly to their vision, in their communications and when giving feedback. They are firstly a good manager and they are focused on their people, surrounding themselves with good people.
Leaders emerge from within the structure of the informal organization. Their personal qualities, the demands of the situation, or a combination of these and other factors attract followers who accept their leadership within one or several overlay structures. Instead of the authority of position held by an appointed head or chief, the emergent leader wields influence or power. Influence is the ability of a person to gain co-operation from others by means of persuasion or control over rewards. Power is a stronger form of influence because it reflects a person’s ability to enforce action through the control of a means of punishment.[94]

We often hear of some leaders are task-oriented or goal-oriented and others are people-oriented. As a leader, if you have to choose between people or purpose, what will you choose? Of course, real-life leadership is not so clearly defined in terms either or and in reality, a compromise is possible. But for the sake of discussion, what will you choose? Why?
The transactional leader (Burns, 1978)[58] is given power to perform certain tasks and reward or punish for the team’s performance. It gives the opportunity to the manager to lead the group and the group agrees to follow his lead to accomplish a predetermined goal in exchange for something else. Power is given to the leader to evaluate, correct, and train subordinates when productivity is not up to the desired level, and reward effectiveness when expected outcome is reached.

I have never taken the course.. All the knowledge I gleaned were from his podcasts and other sources (reddit, FB groups, ImportDojo, etc.) I have 2 products out and am on number 3 amazing selling machine videos hopefully 4 soon. You can absolutely do it without taking the course. With that said, I would imagine there would be rgeat value in that course still, but if I were you I’d just take advantage of all the free info that’s out there.

There were times when I rewarded employees monetarily or with recognition when they finished a task on a project. That’s always expected in the workplace. Creating a vision is not simply a matter of having an idea. Good strategic thinking must be based on evidence, and that means being able to gather and analyse information from a wide range of sources. This is not purely about numbers, but also about knowing and understanding your market and your customers, and then—and this is crucial—using that information to support your strategic decisions.

Externally, it means knowing the organization’s customers (from every  conceivable angle); having a feel for existing and potential markets;  knowing what competitors (and potential competitors) are doing and  planning; staying in touch with industry trends; and monitoring the  environment in general, (which these days is global for just about  everybody), for broader opportunities and threats.

Brown’s core argument is exactly what his title suggests: despite a worldwide fixation on strength as a positive quality, strong leaders—those who concentrate power and decision-making in their own hands—are not necessarily good leaders. The factors of physical presence are military bearing, physical fitness, confidence, and resilience. The leader’s intellectual capacity helps to conceptualize solutions and acquire knowledge to do the job. A leader’s conceptual abilities apply agility, judgment, innovation, interpersonal tact, and domain knowledge. Domain knowledge for leaders encompasses tactical and technical knowledge as well as cultural and geopolitical awareness.[88]

Be consistent in your interactions. If you’re very friendly during group meetings, but chilly when you pass an employee in the hall, your workers may get mixed signals and may not like you very much. It’s important to be cordial at all times–not just during the important ones.

What also emerged from the research was the damaging effect of operating in a constrained environment. Where people lacked either the time or the resources, then generally the first thing to be sacrificed was a focus on purpose and ethics.

An integral part of keeping promises is knowing what’s doable and what’s not. If you can define between the two, the only other obstacle is being honest. Practice this with your kids, practice this with your teammates, and practice this at every opportunity. Developing a strong moral code removes room for those questioning your ability to lead and hold power.

Leaders solve a coordination problem. Thus, a ‘price leader’ may be a small firm but if it is considered to have a good understanding of the market, then its actions are followed by other firms in the industry and this behaviour may not trigger alarm bells for Competition Policy. A ‘dominant firm’ which is the price leader, on the other hand, is more likely to be manipulating prices for a strategic purpose so as to increase or exploit market power.

In Google’s Project Oxygen referenced above, they also found three traits of lower performing managers. These are the things that Google now works with those managers to improve on and avoid in the future.

Motivation means action and action brings results. Sometimes your actions fail to bring the results you want. So you prefer to be nice to yourself and not put yourself in a difficult situation. You wait for the perfect timing, for an opportunity, while you drive yourself into stagnation and sometimes even into depression. Get out there, challenge yourself, do something that you want to do even if you are afraid.

Your teams looks up to you and if you want them to give them their all, you will have to be passionate about it too. When your teammates see you getting your hands dirty, they will also give their best shot. It will also help you to gain the respect of your subordinates and infuse new energy in your team members, which helps them to perform better. If they feel that you are not fully committed or lacks passion, then it would be an uphill task for the leader to motivate your followers to achieve the goal.

Transformational leaders have an upbeat, optimistic attitude that serves as a source of inspiration for followers. If leaders seem discouraged or apathetic, members of the group are likely to also become uninspired.

The interesting thing is The Amazing Selling Machine guys have been doing this for 4-5 years in a row, with the same company name and same address. If they were underhanded or crooked or doing anything illegal, they would have had to dissolve and/or change names and/or re-package under a different name, and/or receive a class action suit and/or a big consumer outrage, and I don’t see any of that. I think their offer, program, and money-back guarantee is ‘fair’ and they’ve operated fairly. It’s just their price point is considerably higher than what you can find comparably with (say) Proven Amazon Course (just one example).

Why am I saying it’s not a scam, then? Well, it isn’t. If you remember a few years ago, I gave those guys (Matt and Jason, founders of ASM) a really hard time, and went out of my way to discourage you from signing up.

When I attended, I had a few different hats on.  I had my “Amazon physical products” hat on, where I was thinking of how I can apply this to my own Amazon physical product that I’ve already launched and am making money from.  I had my “Kindle publishing” hat on, thinking about how I could apply this for my Kindle publishing business.  I also had my “Internet Business” hat on, as well as “How I Can Help Others With This” hat on too.
Everyone’s situation is different so rather than trying to provide blanket advice I’ll say that Matt and Jason do charge a premium price but they’re going to try and reciprocate with value well beyond that.
1) You’re right about all your concerns and that it’s harder than the videos make it seem. There’s a reason they release this information for free…it’s because they know most people won’t be able to do anything with only the big picture info – you need to think about a lot of different things and be comfortable with your general interactions with a supplier before you move forward. Nothing will ever be perfect, so you will have to accept a certain amount of risk with any type of business. The course can’t really help you avoid or minimize any risks directly, but it does help you put the risks in context so you know which ones are more important (deal breakers) and which ones are not so important. With regard to US vs China – I’m not an import / export expert, so I couldn’t tell you which categories are easier to source in the US. Once you’ve identified your top products, you really just have to do the leg work to find a supplier you are comfortable with – wherever they are. If you can’t do this, then it’s time to move on to the next product. There is one product I really wanted to do, but couldn’t find a good source, so I ended up moving on to another one on my list.
I have taken the Amazing Selling Machine courses and am not impressed. I have also read a few of the training manuals from Skip McGrath and I would recommend Skip’s system if someone is really into starting an online business in importing and drop-shipping on Amazon.
