1. Confidence. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will. I hear leaders worrying that if they show too much confidence, others will think them arrogant. Despite preconceived notions, not all groups need have a designated leader. Join a Student Club or Organization – by joining a club or organization, you can learn from your peers about leading a group of people. When the time comes, you may even step up to replace the president once they’ve graduated.
Personal Story: I believe that creativity in business comes from outside inspiration. For example, I enjoy cooking/grilling, interior design and graphic design (it helps that I have interior design and BBQ retail clients). We live in an age of ‘Big Data’ & burgeoning Artificial Intelligence. It may well be that ‘Expert Systems’ will increasingly take leadership roles- i.e. their actions will solve coordination and concurrency problems. Our hearts may misgive us, but our brains may see this is as a good thing. Compassion- as Ethical theorists and Behavioral Psychologists are increasingly finding- may be counterproductive. It may paralyse rather than catalyse needful policy decisions.
Understanding personality dynamics and how different types work together will enable you to be a strong team member, regardless of your actual position. Finally, remember that the best leaders also reflect on their own weaknesses and see people who have different strengths as important contributors (not threats).
You can of course learn about effective leadership skills and practices but being able to implement them yourself may require an altogether different set of skills and attitudes. The question “Can leadership be taught?” has no simple answer and we do not want to argue for one side or the other, but rather keep an open mind on the subject and provide information about the skills good leaders need.
There is more than one way to be a success. Many a person gets a degree but still fails to think well, especially in this age of teaching by results rather than learning for learning’s sake. College graduates get into a comfort zone of high expectation that doesn’t always amount to success, or turns into mediocre success at best, due to training in thinking like a pack and all wanting the same, safe outcomes. This isn’t to denigrate degrees — a degree well done is a degree well worth it. But it’s not the only answer. Start your own business or company, think about online solutions, use social media, find the gaps in the world in need of fixing and be a self made success not driven by textbook standards. You can still be successful, just think beyond your current circumstances.

Nearly 60 percent of Moscone Elementary School’s students are English language learners, but Principal Patty Martel is determined that all of her students will be proficient in reading in English by the time they move on to middle school. In support of this goal, she allocates money from her limited school budget to pay for an early intervention literacy program as soon as a student begins struggling with reading. She also requires that all programs at her school include an element of literacy. Reading and writing are integrated into art, science, and everything else the students do.
If you focus on the excitement of discovery, improving, exploring and experimenting, your motivation will always be fueled. If you focus only on results, your motivation will be like weather—it will die the minute you hit a storm. So the key is to focus on the journey, not the destination. Keep thinking about what you are learning along the way and what you can improve.

Focus, focus and focus. When you listen to someone, give them 100% of your concentration. By holding a phone in your hand – or worse, constantly looking at it – you are not giving all your focus to the person you’re listening to and give the impression that you have no interest in them.

A leader must have the ability to cognitively reframe a company depending upon changing conditions, according to Haydn Shaughnessy, a contributor to Forbes magazine. Whether it is the ability to adapt to new technology or new economic challenges, a great leader is someone who can adjust to change quickly and with enthusiasm. Step 2: Make them care. You need to establish rapport as quickly as possible. If you can, name drop someone you have in common with them. In most cases though, you’ll need to establish common ground another way.

Finally, the ability and willingness to change your approach allows you to reach even the highest goals. No great success was achieved without any effort, or in only one try. Thomas Edison said: “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Tony feels the same way: “I have plenty of failures, but I don’t look at them that way, not because I am in denial but because I make myself learn something from it. Then it becomes a stepping stone instead of a failure.” As you continue exploring how to achieve success, and what success means to you personally, never be afraid to start over and switch up what you’re doing. The path to personal growth is long and ever-changing. Although you can trust that success doesn’t mean the same thing for any two people, you can rest easily knowing no one finds success without effort.
Tell them how long you’ve been teaching your course. If you’ve been teaching the same course twenty times, let them know, so they have a sense that you’ve created the best course possible. If you’re new to the classroom, however, don’t let your students know so they don’t see you as a pushover.
Situational leadership theory takes us on a journey of group development. An appropriate leadership style is needed that complements the person and the situation. The styles a leader uses to manage the team may include telling and directing, selling and coaching, facilitating and supporting, or delegating. But what qualities does a good leader need to display? Some might say vulnerability is too touchy-feely and inappropriate for business. Others may say they’re just not wired for it — it’s not in their personality makeup. Neither is true. Vulnerability is about trust — the backbone of successful leadership. Employees and leaders who trust one another learn to be comfortable being open to one another around their failures, weaknesses, even fears. Whether you’re teaching children or adults, it’s important to have a clear code of conduct, which shows not only your expectations, but the punishments if your students fail to meet them. Common code of conduct rules include showing mutual respect and avoiding disruptive behavior, such as using texting, talking on the phone, or whispering in the back of the classroom.
Network. Networking is making connections with people who have connections. Contrary to popular belief, networking is mutually beneficial. You offer expertise, opinion, or opportunity to someone in exchange for something back.

Even Richard Branson said,” Communication is the most important skill any leader can possess”. Most problems can be solved with some good, honest and open conversations. Think of the big picture. As you’re solving problems (or simply improving what’s already satisfactory), you might notice patterns, and wonder if many of those issues are symptoms of a deeper, bigger problem or construct. Thoreau once said, “For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, one is hacking at the root.” Take a step back and try to find the root. The deeper matter is often not something anybody can solve alone; it’ll require a group effort, which is where your role as a leader comes into play.
This is a bit different than passion, but in other ways it isn’t separable. If one doesn’t care about a subject, an issue, a system, then one won’t spend the time thinking about how it could or should be different. Yet, one could have strong feelings about something and not good ideas, particularly if she didn’t spend a good deal of time studying the topic. Thus a leader has to have some ideas about change, about how the future could be different. Vision then is based on two components that leaders also need: creativity and intellectual drive.

If someone is in a stressful situation, or carrying a lot of anxiety, trying to strong-arm them will do nothing but make things worse.
Leaders flex their leadership style according to circumstances. Rather than having one preferred or dominant style, you need to be able to shift the way you lead between the four core styles of leadership to suit the current situation and the individuals on your team: Controlling, Coaching, Consulting and Collaborating.

No matter who you are, it’s always helpful when you have someone to look up to who is experienced with strong leadership capabilities. It makes it a lot easier to see someone perform in action than living by words on paper.
Maturity. To be a good leader, personal power and recognition must be secondary to the development of your employees. In other words, maturity is based on recognizing that more can be accomplished by empowering others than can be by ruling others.
At the very foundation of the notion of leadership lies trust. Without it, no project or team dynamic could be optimal. Moreover, in an ideal conception of leadership, all of the aspects of trust are linked with each other: the leader must be a trustworthy person; he or she must be able to win others’ trust and help them develop their confidence.

Considering the criticisms of the trait theory outlined above, several researchers have begun to adopt a different perspective of leader individual differences—the leader attribute pattern approach.[24][26][27][28][29] In contrast to the traditional approach, the leader attribute pattern approach is based on theorists’ arguments that the influence of individual characteristics on outcomes is best understood by considering the person as an integrated totality rather than a summation of individual variables.[28][30] In other words, the leader attribute pattern approach argues that integrated constellations or combinations of individual differences may explain substantial variance in both leader emergence and leader effectiveness beyond that explained by single attributes, or by additive combinations of multiple attributes..
While communication skills are important for everyone, leaders and managers perhaps need them even more. These skills are general interpersonal skills, not specific to leadership, but successful leaders tend to show high levels of skill when communicating.
Good leaders are also those who allow their team to develop autonomy and add value according to their own personal strengths. Being able to recognize the strengths of individuals within their team, and allowing them to be responsible and accountable, not only increases employees’ confidence in themselves and their leader, but also increases their performance.

Another factor that covaries with leadership style is whether the person is male or female. When men and women come together in groups, they tend to adopt different leadership styles. Men generally assume an agentic leadership style. They are task-oriented, active, decision focused, independent and goal oriented. Women, on the other hand, are generally more communal when they assume a leadership position; they strive to be helpful towards others, warm in relation to others, understanding, and mindful of others’ feelings. In general, when women are asked to describe themselves to others in newly formed groups, they emphasize their open, fair, responsible, and pleasant communal qualities. They give advice, offer assurances, and manage conflicts in an attempt to maintain positive relationships among group members. Women connect more positively to group members by smiling, maintaining eye contact and respond tactfully to others’ comments. Men, conversely, describe themselves as influential, powerful and proficient at the task that needs to be done. They tend to place more focus on initiating structure within the group, setting standards and objectives, identifying roles, defining responsibilities and standard operating procedures, proposing solutions to problems, monitoring compliance with procedures, and finally, emphasizing the need for productivity and efficiency in the work that needs to be done. As leaders, men are primarily task-oriented, but women tend to be both task- and relationship-oriented. However, it is important to note that these sex differences are only tendencies, and do not manifest themselves within men and women across all groups and situations.[90]
14. Give the benefit of the doubt. Many of the bad things that happen in the course of a day or a week–a miscommunication, an uncomfortable moment, an act of disrespect­–happen because someone is quick to judge and to give their opinion. The best leaders give the benefit of the doubt. They work on being fair and kind and on always giving people a second chance or the benefit of the doubt.
Gain the cooperation of others by making a commitment to get along well with each key person every single day. You always have a choice when it comes to a task: You can do it yourself, or you can get someone else to do it for you. Which is it going to be?
18. Hold people accountable. One of the biggest derailments of leadership happens when people aren’t held accountable. If responsibility and accountability are important to you, don’t let those who are slacking get away with it. You gain respect by sticking to your principles, and your team stays highly functional. It can’t get better than that.
While one might not like to admit that it is true, guys that take care of themselves and look sharp tend to be more successful than those that don’t. As a society and a culture, we attribute certain qualities to men who look the part they play.
There are many definitions of leadership. The Collins English dictionary defines leadership as “the leader(s) of a party or group.” Yet true leadership is much more than that. A leader can be the CEO of an organization or a first year employee who leads his or her team to success behind the scenes. A leader might lead through official authority and power. Yet, just as often great leaders lead through inspiration, persuasion and personal connections.

A good leader has a futuristic vision and knows how to turn his ideas into real-world success stories. Although Pope Francis is a spiritual leader, he doesn’t hesitate to intervene in geopolitics that harms or poses a threat to mankind. 15. Stop micromanaging. Leaders who micromanage their teams are not allowing the talented to excel, the gifted to produce, and the experienced to make best use of their skills. If you want to be a better leader, step back and give people the room they need to do their best.
What SUCCESSFUL people do: They study salary negotiation, the mistakes most people make when trying to negotiate, and how to crack the negotiation code. They make a list of all the reasons they’ve EARNED a raise and they create a strategy for addressing the objections their boss might throw at them. Then they rehearse their pitch 100 times. Top-down leaders driven by hubris have a hard time detaching from their own inner voices to consider other voices, because they think they’re always right. Relationship-oriented leaders are focused on developing the team and the relationships in it. The positives to having this kind of environment are that team members are more motivated and have support. However, the emphasis on relations as opposed to getting a job done might make productivity suffer.
Many people have the tendency to compare the low points of their own lives with the high points of other peoples’ lives. Remember that no matter how perfect somebody’s life may seem, behind closed doors everybody deals with tragedy, insecurity, and other difficulties.[8] Pay attention to and limit your use of social media to help you remember this.
Confidence is important because people will be looking to you on how to behave, particularly if things aren’t going 100% right. If you remain calm and poised, team members are far more likely to as well. As a result, morale and productivity will remain high and the problem will be solved more quickly.
The first woman to head the 212-year-old company (DD), Kullman took over as a dismal 2009 began and by year-end had publicly vowed to raise earnings over three years at a 20% annual compound rate. She did 24%, as she accelerated a major strategic change — “and nobody likes change,” says a colleague — that downplayed chemicals and positioned agriculture and nutrition to power DuPont’s third century.
Personal Story: I believe that creativity in business comes from outside inspiration. For example, I enjoy cooking/grilling, interior design and graphic design (it helps that I have interior design and BBQ retail clients). But I make a point to find time for these creative activities which are not only therapeutic but they can also ignite my professional creativity. What are your creative outlets?
Being a good leader isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes you will have to make difficult or unpopular decisions, or maintain your positivity even when you don’t really believe it. This is where your leadership mindset will be the difference between mediocre and exceptional leadership. Your company can only meet the goals you set if you are at the front, leading by example, motivating and encouraging your employees to become coordinated and focussed. If you are going into a ‘new frontier’, then there will be mistakes, miscalculations and the inexperience of everyone involved in this new venture. In situations like this it is your leadership that defines whether you succeed or fail. Ultimately, there are many different styles of leader, but each of these qualities are important elements in the mix.
What makes a good leader? Just like what is the best leadership style? There is no magic formula nor is there a one-size-fits-all answer. Perhaps we should agree on what has been proven to result in a good leader? Some might believe that a good leader can be measured from a qualitative perspective, meaning that he or she has built a reputation of being a good boss! Personally I prefer — and for the purpose of this article — we should use a more measurable approach to define just what makes a good leader.
Collaborate – Most companies rely on teams of individuals collaborating toward a common goal. Good leaders not only provide guidance and support, but are willing to pitch in and help. They also know how to draw out team members’ talents and make them feel valued – which, in turn, may make them feel more invested in the company’s success.
But achieving your ultimate life requires a tremendous deal of learning. It requires an intense dedication to gaining knowledge, learning important lessons, and receiving teachings that add to your wisdom, experience, and education.
Keep your promises. You know how politicians are viewed as promise-breakers? Good. You also know how people hate politicians? Well, there you have it. Break your promises and you lose respect. Point blank. You can fit the suit, you can have all the charisma, and you can have the knowledge, but if you don’t deliver on what you promised to deliver, the people will have your silver platter.
Leaders are committed to and personally involved in improving organization performance. They should create and maintain the internal environment in which people can become fully involved in achieving the organization’s objectives.
The principles in this book are not remarkably new and the dictionary definitions at the start of every section seem a little out of place. The tendency for the points to spill into each other was also a little distracting. But the inspiring stories in every section were a nice touch.

Learn from your failures. Each failure is an opportunity to learn. If you make a mistake and refuse to learn, odds are you’ll make that same mistake sometime down the line. If you make a mistake and learn from it, you won’t waste your time making the same mistake again.

Leadership means different things to different people around the world, and different things in different situations. For example, it could relate to community leadership, religious leadership, political leadership, and leadership of campaigning groups.
It’s important to give staff time to innovate and come up with new ideas, different ways of doing things, and solutions to problems. However, be clear that a decision is expected; set a time limit and stick to it. Allow time but be mindful that a good pace is better for business energy.
A lot of people don’t realize how important inner circles are because all we see are individual leaders. When you look at CEOs, best selling authors, world-renowned speakers, etc. you rarely hear about the mentors and colleagues who make their success possible.

Establish expectations for appropriate behavior. Make it clear that you expect your children to avoid foul language, have dinner at the dinner table, and to maintain a positive attitude when possible. Repeating these rules and others early and often will show your children that you have clear rules for what is and is not acceptable in your home.
Because of increasing competitiveness, only the leaders and organizations that can accurately anticipate future markets can possibly survive. Only leaders with foresight can gain the “first mover advantage.”
At the same time, don’t be too chatty or social with your employees. It’s healthy to make friends in the workplace, but if all you’re doing is chatting everyone up at the watercooler, people may think you’re more focused on gaining approval than being a good leader.
Next year marks the 70th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination. Known for his messages of truth, religious harmony and non-violence, he was murdered by Nathuram Godse, a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the right wing advocate of Hindu nationalism, which is the fountainhead of India’s ruling party, the BJP under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Many Indians remember Gandhi as a leader who had lived and died for the cause of Hindu-Muslim amity. He led a hunger strike on January 13, 1948 seeking to restore religious harmony in the country. Godse shot him 17 days later, because he thought Gandhi favoured the political demands of India’s Muslims during the partition of the Indian subcontinent in August 1947.
Every great leader shares six characteristics, and it is these characteristics that help them to succeed. Every exceptional leader has developed and honed their leadership skills, continuously learning and developing over time to shape their leadership success.
A leader is a person who influences a group of people towards a specific result. It is not dependent on title or formal authority. (Elevos, paraphrased from Leaders, Bennis, and Leadership Presence, Halpern & Lubar.) Ogbonnia (2007) defines an effective leader “as an individual with the capacity to consistently succeed in a given condition and be viewed as meeting the expectations of an organization or society.” Leaders are recognized by their capacity for caring for others, clear communication, and a commitment to persist.[96] An individual who is appointed to a managerial position has the right to command and enforce obedience by virtue of the authority of their position. However, she or he must possess adequate personal attributes to match this authority, because authority is only potentially available to him/her. In the absence of sufficient personal competence, a manager may be confronted by an emergent leader who can challenge her/his role in the organization and reduce it to that of a figurehead. However, only authority of position has the backing of formal sanctions. It follows that whoever wields personal influence and power can legitimize this only by gaining a formal position in the hierarchy, with commensurate authority.[94] Leadership can be defined as one’s ability to get others to willingly follow. Every organization needs leaders at every level.[97]
Solve problems. People who are successful encourage progress by solving problems and answering questions. No matter where you are or what you’re doing, look around and try to think of ways you can contribute. What are people struggling with or complaining about? How can you make life easier for them in an effective way? Can you re-design or re-organize some aspect of the situation so things run more smoothly? Can you create a product or provide a service that fills a critical gap?
It’s important to manage your energy. Leaders are constantly on display and under scrutiny. You need to have energy in reserve so that you can manage your mood and the image you project, and have something in the tank when crises happen (as they inevitably will). Learn to recognise when you are tired or stressed, and how that makes you behave. Watch out for the signs. Learn also to recognise where your positive energy comes from and what takes it away.
A great leader is one who successfully serves the people he/she is supposed to lead. Period. Success will be dependent upon circumstances and opportunities. What does not make them a great leader: serving self interest, ducking responsibity, enriching themselves, not caring for their people, blindness for reality.
Be Authentic – If possible, try to stay in touch with your inner, real self. Recognizing both your talents and your shortcomings can be an important path to authenticity. When you’re aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and when you acknowledge what you don’t know, people are more likely to offer their help.
A leader by its meaning is one who goes first and leads by example, so that others are motivated to follow him. This is a basic requirement. To be a leader, a person must have a deep-rooted commitment to the that he will strive to achieve it even if nobody follows him!
There are numerous guidelines, books, classes and consultants aimed at helping individuals develop these traits and, perhaps more importantly, understand which traits are most effective under which circumstances and with which teams.

It’s safe to say that all great leaders will have to enter unchartered waters at some point during their career (figuratively, of course). Because of this, they have to be able to trust their intuition and draw on past experiences to guide them.
