“become a better you top 10-way”

It took many years for me to realize how saying “I’m sorry” can help. For years, I thought leadership meant insulating myself from my subordinates and hiding any weaknesses. If I made a mistake, I’d pretend it was just a misunderstanding or someone else’s fault. If you fess up quickly, people working for you will respect you more and follow directions.

At the time, I convinced myself I had to communicate more with my team leads about “best practices” and “company direction” but the truth is, I should have demonstrated the ideas instead. I should have helped team members reach goals and paved the way for them by my example. It’s the difference between just giving information versus nurturing growth.

So what can you do embrace these valued leadership qualities and become a stronger and more effective leader? Transformational leaders are usually described as enthusiastic, passionate, genuine and energetic. These leaders are not just concerned about helping the group achieve its goals; they also care about helping each member of the group reach his or her full potential.

“We are there for the children and we mustn’t ever forget that,” says Llyn Codling, executive headteacher of Portswood, St Mary’s and Weston Park primary schools, Southampton. Like Codling, successful school leaders are passionate about teaching and learning and show great commitment to children. They take an active interest in their pupils’ work – and that of their staff.

Given the prevailing business climate, and in the UK the lengthy period of instability and change the country faces as it moves towards Brexit, it is likely that the pressures will only increase. This will pose further challenges to the ability of leaders in all sectors to act “with purpose”, yet the requirement to do so has never been more pressing.

A commanding leader can make decisions quickly. They don’t need to go through any discussions to come up with a decision most of the time. This saves time and is helpful especially during a crisis. Commanding leaders are often respected and are rarely challenged by the team.

We talked earlier about how becoming a leader is one of the most important qualities one needs to “move the chains” in the game of business. In order to achieve greatness as a leader, one must then have a team of individuals who believe in the mission in order to move forward. That’s where assembling a great team of partners plays such an important role in any profitable business. Many start out alone and the wearer of many hats, but a business can only scale so far if there is only one source of energy, of inspiration, and of the actual sweat equity it takes to keep the lights on.

Business leaders have put themselves in a better position to being more effective by adapting to volatility and to the demands of the ever evolving styles of leadership. The good news is, business leadership effectiveness ranks higher at 31%, compared to the global average for all forms of leadership effectiveness, which stands at 24%. It is also higher when compared to other forms of leadership, according to the KLCM report.

Far too many bosses communicate far too little. It’s often difficult for busy business owners and executives to keep their employees up-to-date on the latest organizational news. Regardless, you must make every effort to get employees the information they need to do their jobs quickly and efficiently.

Abreu started El Sistema in a garage with 11 musicians in 1975. Today it teaches music to 400,000 poor kids in Venezuela and has inspired similar programs worldwide. Its value is that it teaches not just music but also discipline, practice, cooperation, and culture. A canny leader, Abreu has cultivated support from Venezuela’s many varying governments over the past 39 years.

In every strategic planning session that I have conducted for large and small corporations, the first value that all the gathered executives agree upon for their company is integrity. They all agree on the importance of complete honesty in everything they do, both internally and externally.

Second, leaders should think about their own personal moral code: what are the core values that matter most to you as an individual? People don’t leave their values at the door when they go into work, so think about how can these values can be integrated into your work. Finally, when making decisions, don’t just focus on short-term performance outcomes, but also take time to think about various stakeholders who are affected.

No matter how old you are, where you’re from or what you do for a living, we all share something in common—a desire to be successful. Each person’s definition of success is different, however, as some may define success as being a loving and faithful spouse or a caring and responsible parent, while most people would equate success with wealth, fame, and power. No matter how old you are, where you’re from or what you do for a living, we all share something in common—a desire to be successful.
