Leading a group of people requires a mutual sense of trust and understanding between the leader and the team members. New methods and measurements were developed after these influential reviews that would ultimately reestablish trait theory as a viable approach to the study of leadership. For example, improvements in researchers’ use of the round robin research design methodology allowed researchers to see that individuals can and do emerge as leaders across a variety of situations and tasks.[17] Additionally, during the 1980s statistical advances allowed researchers to conduct meta-analyses, in which they could quantitatively analyze and summarize the findings from a wide array of studies. Dress the part. If you walk into an office in a suit and tie, constantly glancing at your watch, people are going to assume you’re waiting for some schmuck who’s late for a business meeting. Walk into an office in a t-shirt and baseball cap and people will start wanting to know where their pizza is. If you want to lead, you gotta look the part.
Why should your staff and team members give it their all if you don’t bother to? By proving your own commitment, great leaders will inspire others to do the same, as well as earn their respect and instill a good work ethic.

Not everyone has been blessed with the opportunity to be led by influential and competent leaders. In fact, you might be shuddering at the very thought of reliving your experiences with them, or perhaps you have mended those wounds and are now lucky enough to be exposed to someone with an inspiring style of leadership.
Leaders can also motivate and influence people through their natural charisma and appeal, and through other sources of power  , such as the power to pay bonuses or assign tasks to people. However, good leaders don’t rely too much on these types of power to motivate and inspire others.
Lead, don’t follow. Leading the way can be dangerous. You’re taking on the headwinds literally, perhaps, or you’re banking on an idea — like Facebook or Google — that someone has already tried before. Summon up the courage to do something different.
Even in the worst situations such as experiencing low team morale or team members having made a big mistake at work, a great leader stays positive and figure out ways to keep the team motivated to solve the problems.

  1. 3. Become a great communicator. Discipline yourself to understand what’s happening around you by observing and listening. A great leader is always a skilled communicator–not only as speaker but as a listener, someone who stays focused and tuned in to the nuance of a conversation.
    To do this, team members need performance goals that are linked to the team’s overall vision.     Be confident. This step has nothing to do with actually knowing what you’re doing. As long as you’re confident, few people will ask questions. People assume things, and when you act as if you belong, they assume you do. Therefore, when you are confident, they will naturally assume you know what you are doing. This earns you trust, responsibility, and respect.
    Keep your promises. You know how politicians are viewed as promise-breakers? Good. You also know how people hate politicians? Well, there you have it. Break your promises and you lose respect. Point blank. You can fit the suit, you can have all the charisma, and you can have the knowledge, but if you don’t deliver on what you promised to deliver, the people will have your silver platter.
