There’s a tendency in any job to do the easiest tasks first. Duh! They are the easiest! It’s always nice to look like we’re getting more done each week and clearing up our time for the harder challenges in the workplace. In leadership, that’s a big mistake. That troublemaker on your team? The drop in sales after a marketing snafu? A big tax change? Address those problems first to free up your time to lead better the rest of the week.
A small Seattle coffee retailer has become 20,000 shops worldwide under Schultz’s leadership (SBUX), with many more planned. Crucially, he understood that he was creating an experience, not selling a product. Far ahead of most CEOs, he saw the value of offering medical insurance to all employees, even part-timers, and pursuing environmental and social projects that inspire employees and attract customers.
All to often, career development is a box to be filled in during a performance review. Unfortunately, it is then not discussed again until the next review. Even if someone is promoted, they’re set up to fail as they haven’t been groomed for the new role.
The authors name Xi Jinping and Narendra Modi as leaders, who have been able to lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and boost growth. They have realised the horizon new technologies and approaches open up – the Fourth Industrial Revolution – and capitalise on them to alleviate poverty (in India) and facilitate business dealing (in China). But Xi and Modi can’t really claim the credit by reaping the harvest for the seeds their predecessors had sown, even though the majority of their citizens are content with the “current economic condition.”
Lagarde became IMF chief in July 2011 as the European debt crisis grew most acute. Her unenviable task required juggling the concerns of 188 member countries while supporting IMF bailouts of Greece, Ireland, Portugal, and other troubled countries. She did so and is still doing so largely with success, though the IMF’s stringent conditions on aid have angered some. Lagarde combines her tough prescription of austerity with an argument that reforms will help the poor and unemployed above all — a balance that has increased acceptance of her message.
Ultimately, everyone has it in them to be a great and effective leader. It takes knowledge and practice sure, but if you are flexible and consider the many different forms of leadership out there, then you may find your skills as a leader, and the ultimate effectiveness of your team, grows and expands to greatness.
So does this mean these are the only three common themes across leadership? The answer is absolutely not. There are other ideas around things like vision, communication, and responsibilities that are also key parts of the leadership skill-set. Depending on which approach we consider and how it is applied, however, those skills may be subsets of the three themes we have discussed here or mixed in with others. These three themes are important because they are aligned with some of the key ideas of servant leadership, which is what we will begin looking at next time.
While it is important to be personally organised and motivated as a leader—and see our pages on Time Management and Self-Motivation for more about these areas—it is perhaps even more important to be able to plan and deliver for the organisation.
5. Celebration. In today’s work environment, people are working very long hours and they need to take some time to celebrate their successes in order to recharge their batteries. Those leaders who fail to do this create burnout environment overtime.
Take time to educate yourself and become qualified. Never assume that you learn as much on the job. In this global economy, those wishing to succeed must have the necessary tools to be successful, and that includes having an education.
A leader is someone who has influence over a group of people. This can be an executive, a pop star or an employee who has the ability to influence coworkers’ thoughts, feelings, beliefs and actions. A leader does not necessarily have a specific title. You can tell a leader by his influence over others.
3. Care. The strongest, most effective leaders I’ve met care not just about the business, but about the people in it and the people impacted by it. Plus, they show they care through their words and actions, even proving how they care for themselves and their family by taking unplugged vacations and continuing their own professional development. Care shouldn’t be a four-letter word in our workplace today — and the best leaders know it.
Be you: You can’t be something that you’re not. If you want to be a good leader, you have to be yourself. Take a look in the mirror and figure out your strengths and weaknesses. Let your team know who you are and encourage them to help you in your weaker areas.

What comes to mind when you think of fabric that is resilient? Something that is flexible yet durable? Elastic yet tough? Similarly, a resilient leader needs to strike a balance between being flexible and durable; in other words, between pathfinding and stewardship.
Don’t waste your money on this book. This is a 2.99 book not an 8.00 book. It is 29 pages long and it doesn’t have anything in it that you can’t get our of another book. Very disgusted with this purchase. I bought it based on reviews, the reviews must be from the people who bought it because I didn’t find anything that was very insightful.
“It’s fascinating how differently the same business can perform with different leaders. We look first for intellectual honesty. It drives me crazy when you meet with management and there are real issues and they act like they aren’t there. Also important is a contrarian bent, a confidence to go against the prevailing trend. You generally don’t want people who are saying this is what we should do because this is what others are doing. You want people who are spending when others are not, and taking chips off the table when everybody else is putting them on.”
So I told him, “I want to be a bestseller, but I also want to generate $X million in revenue and I want to do this publicity and blah blah blah —” He cut me off and said, “Cut the BS. What’s your number one goal?”
