Scanning these different approaches, however, there do seem to be some common themes. The first theme is that leaders expect the best from themselves and help others be their best as well. As anyone who ever played high school sports can attest, coaches are always talking about the importance of ‘senior leadership’ on their teams. What they mean by this is having people who lead in both word and deed. Leaders are the first ones on the field and the last ones off. The ones who never quit and won’t let others quit either. They are focused on the success of the team, not only on making themselves look good.

A rising tide lifts all boats – always think win-win. It exists. Just because the world thinks the business world is nasty, and that you need to be manipulative and maneuvering to win, you need not participate in it.
Don’t do everything yourself. Great leaders, such as Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Virgin mogul Richard Branson, surround themselves with talented individuals who can offer their own solutions. Set the vision and determine the goals, but trust people to make it happen. Tolerance is good; indecisiveness is bad. Communicate the vision for the future and if things need changing, tell people and involve them in making the changes. Show your confidence by letting them participate in the design of a new strategy. If the team is too cautious in their approach to change, give them one more chance but with greater clarity.

5. Be yourself. Although “be yourself” may sound like trite advice, the most respected leaders are personable and genuine. Stepping into a role that requires managerial skills doesn’t mean you need to adopt a false persona. Your colleagues would likely see right through that, anyway.
Good communication skills allow the good leader to be a better negotiator and conflict manager. Being able to effectively explain the circumstance and justify the decision taken not only makes team members feel more comfortable with the decision, but also view their leader as being more credible.

Create a team of leaders. Developing leaders across the team is developing a better team. Good leaders listen, motivate, delegate and provide vision. Leaders can improve listening skills through practice and education. A leader motivates those under her to work hard, and she inspires productivity. Knowing when and to whom to delicate tasks is an important leadership skill, along with providing a vision that is clear and comprehensive.
In a science-based organization, every member needs to be comfortable with the fact that there will always be new discoveries made. And because both the business and science sides of the company are about growth, each manager must realize that new ideas, methods, and processes will continue to unfold. There is no finish line. The way things are done now is not the way they will always be done in the future. Problems not solved today will be solved tomorrow.

One of the more recent definitions of leadership comes from Werner Erhard, Michael C. Jensen, Steve Zaffron, and Kari Granger who describe leadership as “an exercise in language that results in the realization of a future that wasn’t going to happen anyway, which future fulfills (or contributes to fulfilling) the concerns of the relevant parties…”. This definition ensures that leadership is talking about the future and includes the fundamental concerns of the relevant parties. This differs from relating to the relevant parties as “followers” and calling up an image of a single leader with others following. Rather, a future that fulfills on the fundamental concerns of the relevant parties indicates the future that wasn’t going to happen is not the “idea of the leader”, but rather is what emerges from digging deep to find the underlying concerns of those who are impacted by the leadership.
Leaders do this by staying true to our second theme, which is to stay motivated and motivate others. Have you ever seen a true leader who wasn’t always ‘on’? Me either. Ever seen true leader who wasn’t inspiring those around them, no matter how challenging the task? Neither have I. Now this doesn’t mean that leaders are unnaturally hyperactive Pollyanna’s. Most great leaders I have known are exhausted at the end of the day. Many are concerned and even stressed about how best to lead their teams to the desired goals. They’re honest with their teams when they have such concerns, but they don’t get bogged down with worry and doubt. Instead they focus on finding the solutions, and they do so with zeal.
Practice your speech in front of a mirror (or some friends) until you are confident. Be sure to speak loudly and clearly, and to enunciate your words. Lastly, try not to use filler words, like “uh” and um.”
We can achieve even the biggest goals as long as we keep the end in mind and keep taking action to get there. No matter how tough things were in the past or our much we struggle in the present, persistence gives us power: “When you meet an obstacle, as you inevitably will, persistence determines what you will do; whether you will give up or keep going. Persistence is what gets you back on your feet, dusted down and ready to go again.”
