Generally speaking, there are two types of people. One makes things because they want to make money; the more things they make, the more money they make. What they make doesn’t really matter that much to them–they’ll make anything as long as it pays.

No matter the situation, showing the person you are working with that you are on the same team can go a long way. If they come to you with an issue, take a moment to see things from their point of view. Maybe they have someone above them breathing down their neck. Maybe they have a lot on their plate. There is a reason why they coming to you with a certain energy. The key is to meet them where they are, and then position yourself as a resource–not an enemy. If someone is in a stressful situation, or carrying a lot of anxiety, trying to strong-arm them will do nothing but make things worse.

You must lead by example and obtain management skills that inspire others to join you in the exciting project of building a great company. At the same time, you must become excellent at the key capabilities and functions of leadership and set yourself on a course of continuous improvement throughout your career.

This can vary but tends to involve good self-confidence, a lot of luck, the willingness to seize opportunities when they present themselves, planning goals and sticking to them and being observant about what others need and want in the world.

Leaders are not born they are developed through hard work and a constant focus on improving all areas of their leadership. People are complicated and leading them is an evolving challenge. Give yourself fully to this challenge.

  1. Set a timeline for when you want to achieve your objective. If you don’t know when you will achieve your objective by, then it’s hard to know whether you have failed. Give yourself a timeline that is difficult but doable. Winning a Tour de France from scratch in two years is not reasonable, but booking a comedy gig in front of at least 20 paying customers probably is.
    Form refers to what a leader DOES – behaviours and actions taken that demonstrate leadership competencies and often are driven by organisational rules and policies. Form comes from the outside in. It is the image or persona the leader creates.
    A good boss also recognizes the importance of regular feedback. Acknowledge team members when they have successfully navigated an issue, and talk about what they did right. As you might expect, employees will enjoy the recognition and feel even more confident handling similar situations in the future.
