Stepping into a new leadership role can be daunting. Anyone in this position for the first time faces huge challenges to convince their hiring managers they made the right choice. While it’s a time for celebration, some will be afraid how they’ll cope, and worry about how to lead staff effectively and convincingly.
Be decisive. You’re standing in a circle of a group of friends, debating on what to do that night. Everyone is dilly-dallying, complaining, nixing everyone else’s ideas until one person finally steps up and says, “Guys, we’re doing this.” That person rose to the top, saw the situation needed direction, and took charge. Thanks to recent publications such as Susan Cain’s Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, and her TED talk, which was viewed by more than 5 million people, the portrayal of introverts is changing for the better. Cain’s work has spawned many positive articles about introversion, including this one. We can benefit a great deal if we set aside our misconceptions about introverts, and take the time to truly evaluate the many gifts that introverts bring to the table.
While the type of person can vary immensely, more often than not, they will all have a certain set of skills and personality traits that make them a good leader. According to recent surveys, many groups find that a good business leader will often have several or all of these characteristics.
Great leaders have a remarkable impact on the people they encounter. They’re motivated to achieve big things and they do it by guiding, challenging and supporting others. The work is difficult and sometimes vexing, but it’s remarkably rewarding.
You have to know where your destination is before you can map out a plan to get there. To improve your leadership skills, first set specific life goals with appropriate timelines. Design your goals by moving backwards from the end of your life to the present week. Then, formulate action plans you can commit to that will get you to where you want to be.
Leadership and influence are similar, but they’re not the same. Leaders definitely have influence, but not all influencers (even very highly respected ones) are in leadership positions. Leadership tends to affect people’s actions, which is why it’s so valued in the business world. Influence has more of an effect on people’s character, thought process, and values. Like the effective leader, the effective influencer develops positive qualities that reach people, whether on an individual level, or in ways that impact millions of people. Anyone can develop these qualities, whether or not they’re in a position to lead.
I wish I had spent more time studying résumés for clues about potential rather than their narrow skillset as listed on a sheet of paper. I should have looked for things like an interest in hang-gliding or animal rescue as a sign that the person was ambitious and daring. I should have questioned the overly detailed résumé that listed everything about previous work assignments but nothing about risk-taking or aspirations for growth.
Apart from having a futuristic vision, a leader should have the ability to take the right decision at the right time. Decisions taken by leaders have a profound impact on masses. A leader should think long and hard before taking a decision but once the decision is taken, stand by it. Although, most leaders take decisions on their own, but it is highly recommended that you consult key stakeholders before taking a decision. After all, they are the ones who will benefit or suffer from your decisions.
Leaders and managers both need to understand how to build and manage a team. They need to know how to recruit effectively, and bring people ‘on board’ through induction processes. They also need to understand the importance of performance management, both on a regular basis, and to manage poor performance.
[Focus on the objective (the Vision), not on leading. The means can and should be developed collaboratively, though the team leader is the final arbiter. You inspire others by engaging people justly, managing yourself, acting with integrity and passion]
You can not handle bad people. You need to focus on what you want and walk away from them. You can also talk to them and let them know that you are there, but your success comes before anything. Just remember that and just stay focused.
