In-group members are perceived by the leader as being more experienced, competent, and willing to assume responsibility than other followers. The leader begins to rely on these individuals to help with especially challenging tasks. If the follower responds well, the leader rewards him/her with extra coaching, favorable job assignments, and developmental experiences. If the follower shows high commitment and effort followed by additional rewards, both parties develop mutual trust, influence, and support of one another. Research shows the in-group members usually receive higher performance evaluations from the leader, higher satisfaction, and faster promotions than out-group members. In-group members are also likely to build stronger bonds with their leaders by sharing the same social backgrounds and interests.
PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Don’t expect other people to believe in you, don’t expect your friends to get behind you or your family to support you. If they do, great! But if they don’t, you can’t go around blaming them for your failures.
Leadership also includes looking for leadership potential in others. By developing leadership skills within your team, you create an environment where you can continue success in the long term. And that’s a true measure of great leadership.
Make an effort to seek and obtain that which you consider will help you to be fulfilled. However, realize that objects do not make you happy, so seeking money as a means of happiness can only leave you feeling hollow. Instead, try to be peaceful by giving some time to yourself to have peace in mind. Try to go for outings so that you can have a change from routine life. Try to spend your time with good people who can become friends. Try to work hard to earn good money so that you can lead the life that you think will help you be fulfilled. If you don’t have, strive rather than feel deprived.
Confidence is important because people will be looking to you on how to behave, particularly if things aren’t going 100% right. If you remain calm and poised, team members are far more likely to as well. As a result, morale and productivity will remain high and the problem will be solved more quickly.

Great leaders have two passions, firstly a passion for their people and secondly a passion for the organisation and its purpose. They combine these two passions to provide focus and purpose for their people and, in doing so, they engage the passion of their people.
Elon Musk is a great example of a leader with confidence. He truly believes that Tesla will be successful, which he has shown many times through his actions. He converted 532,000 stock options at $6.63 each, their value on Dec. 4, 2009, before Tesla went public. It was a hefty bargain considering Tesla’s stock price stood at around $195 per share at that time. He doesn’t apologize for his beliefs and has drawn fire from just about everyone for his political actions.
This book laid out the key characteristics that a great leader should possess. It also provides great information on the different types of leadership and personality and how to discover your own personal style of leadership. Great book and I find it really useful.
Although leaders may be born with qualities that make them effective at influencing others, good leaders are always learning. Good leaders involve themselves in accountability groups, attend leadership conferences and read books that strengthen leadership skills. Nohria believes effective leaders are masters of the classical elements of rhetoric, as outlined by Aristotle centuries ago. “You can reach people through logos or logic, by appealing to their sense of what is rational,” he explains. “You can use pathos, appealing to their emotions, or you can make an argument based on their sense of values or ethos.” Great leaders, he notes, “spend the bulk of their time communicating, and they know how to employ all three of Aristotle’s rhetorical elements.”

Good leaders recognize that delegation does more than simply alleviate their own stress levels (although that’s obviously a nice perk). Delegating to others shows that you have confidence in their abilities, which subsequently results in higher morale in the workplace, as well as loyalty from your staff. They want to feel appreciated and trusted.

Be liked. Though it’s important for your workers to respect you most of all, it couldn’t hurt for them to think you’re a person who is worth spending time with. This will make them more excited to work for you and to have you as their leader! Here are some ways to make sure you are liked:
The true leader will have the ability to gather people around him. People will listen to him even when he’s not known as the leader. He’ll motivate people. The one with those abilities should be the right leader.
If you know your team will be growing beyond your abilities to manage them yourself, start thinking about who on your team has the right qualities to lead. Talk to them about their leadership potential and if they’re interested, start grooming them before you need them.
Only about 10% of people have this quality of future-orientation. This small percentage includes all the movers, shakers, entrepreneurs, business builders, top salespeople, artists, musicians, and creators of all kinds.
Strategize. A mentor will probably have more vision than you because s/he’s been in the game longer, with more successes and failures. You can draw on their legacy of experience to strategize about the future.
Character-based (or essence) leadership refers to what is at the core; those qualities of a leader that are from the inside out. Essence is about purpose, values, beliefs, and vision. It is who the leader wants to BE to their followers – the example the leader wants to set.
Are you a business leader just because you run a small business? No. But you need to learn how to be a business leader because without business leadership, your small business ship will circle aimlessly and eventually run out of power.
In any case, it’s always good to be reminded that life can be whatever we want it to be: “Do not make the mistake of believing that life holds no purpose for you. Remember that you are here only once. This is your life – right now! So make sure you live the life you were born to live.”
Step 2: Make them care. You need to establish rapport as quickly as possible. If you can, name drop someone you have in common with them. In most cases though, you’ll need to establish common ground another way.
We live in a world that is changing each and every day, at a speed that any of us can really truly appreciate. Technology over the last 30-50 years has altered the way we communicate not only with our neighbor and loved ones but our business contacts around the world. The generations that have grown up with this technology often take it for granted, never once stopping to “smell the roses” and to realize that they live in an amazing time in history and that much of what they have in their lives – everything from the electricity powering their lights, the cars that help them get to their next meeting, to their smartphones in their pockets are all things they should very much be thankful for.
