Principals at successful schools understand the strengths and needs of their students and they know what is happening in the classrooms at their schools. These principals play an active role in planning and supporting instruction that is appropriate for their students, and they ensure that school time and resources are focused on student achievement.

In the words of author Hans Finzel, “Leaders are paid to be dreamers.” Whether you’re leading a small community group or a large corporation, you have to know your team/organization’s goals better than anyone else.
Today’s leaders understand the importance of developing and gaining support for team-wide vision. The vision is an idealized state of the future or a future destination that provides context for organizational, departmental and individual goals and activities.
Good leaders are good communicators. You have to do it all the time. It means thinking about what other people know and how they are experiencing what you are doing, especially change. It’s important to communicate in a way other people can relate to and engage with. And you have to make it easy for people to remember what you are saying: make it simple, clear and coherent.
It is truly wonderful to meet a listener that is good. The first time I met the CEO of one of our clients, he really impressed me with his unbelievably great listening skills. He never interrupted me, he gave me enough time and space to talk, he was interested in what I was telling him, he asked a lot of follow-up questions and really made me feel that the most important thing for him at the moment was to get to get a deep understanding of what I was telling him. He made me feel important and appreciated. I will never forget that meeting.
It’s not just the creation of results that makes good leadership. Good leaders are able to deliberately create challenging results by enlisting the help of others. They can single handedly turn failing companies into Fortune 500 organizations. They can change company cultures. Good leadership is an essential key to corporate success.
There is more than one way to be a success. Many a person gets a degree but still fails to think well, especially in this age of teaching by results rather than learning for learning’s sake. College graduates get into a comfort zone of high expectation that doesn’t always amount to success, or turns into mediocre success at best, due to training in thinking like a pack and all wanting the same, safe outcomes. This isn’t to denigrate degrees — a degree well done is a degree well worth it. But it’s not the only answer. Start your own business or company, think about online solutions, use social media, find the gaps in the world in need of fixing and be a self made success not driven by textbook standards. You can still be successful, just think beyond your current circumstances.

Any good leader knows how important it is to develop the skills of those around them. The best can recognize those skills early on. Not only will development make work easier as they improve and grow, it will also foster morale. In addition, they may develop some skills that you don’t possess that will be beneficial to the workplace.

When my career brought me to Hollywood, I saw various levels of narcissism and unethical, mean-spirited people. The industry is tough and it challenges your moral compass. It easy to to turn into something ugly and ungrateful. It takes a lot of work to stay kind, genuine and true but it is well worth it.”
Vision. You’re working towards a goal that’s greater than yourself. It could be something small, like the success of the team, or a larger vision like world peace. Working towards a vision is far more inspiring than working towards personal gain.
“Research clearly shows that transformational leaders—leaders who are positive, inspiring, and who empower and develop followers—are better leaders,” explains psychologist and leadership expert Ronald E. Riggio. “They are more valued by followers and have higher performing teams.”
Think of the big picture. As you’re solving problems (or simply improving what’s already satisfactory), you might notice patterns, and wonder if many of those issues are symptoms of a deeper, bigger problem or construct. Thoreau once said, “For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, one is hacking at the root.” Take a step back and try to find the root. The deeper matter is often not something anybody can solve alone; it’ll require a group effort, which is where your role as a leader comes into play.
