Be sure to address both short-term and long-term goals; try to think beyond financial and career goals, such as relationship goals, personal goals for bettering yourself, things you would like to experience, or things you want to learn. Peter Drucker wrote, “Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.” In Drucker’s assessment, a leader starts by asking, “What needs to be done?” He noted the increasing prominence of “knowledge workers” and suggested that the new challenge is to lead people rather than manage them.
4. Leadership transitions. Going from individual contributor to supervisor is only the first of many transitions along the leadership pipeline. You need to understand the business model, how it applies to your current position, what you need to do to provide the greatest value, and how to leverage your strengths at this level. Even if you get knocked down at the first hurdle, you should always keep going. Resilience is a key trait for success as it is what can help you to continue going, no matter what. In life, you will face obstacles and things that might hinder your success. However, having resilience can really help you to bounce back from these things quickly.

  1. When employees are given the opportunity to exercise ownership over their work, and use their brains to make decisions on their own, their competency and confidence increase. In turn, leaders empower their people to become leaders themselves. In highly effective organizations, there are leaders at every level, not just at the top. The solution is always to push authority down so you’re creating a leader-leader culture, not a leader-follower culture.
    Follow up on opportunities. If you have a chance to shine, take it. If you are worried you won’t have time and energy for a good opportunity, ask yourself: would this contribute to my end goals? If it would, then get rid of other commitments in order to pursue this opportunity.
