Aristocratic thinkers have postulated that leadership depends on one’s “blue blood” or genes. Monarchy takes an extreme view of the same idea, and may prop up its assertions against the claims of mere aristocrats by invoking divine sanction (see the divine right of kings). Focus on what you want to do, and take steps to get where you want to be. Learn the skills that are necessary for that job or position you want in your life. When people see your determination toward reaching your goals, they’ll reconsider.

Out-group members often receive less time and more distant exchanges than their in-group counterparts. With out-group members, leaders expect no more than adequate job performance, good attendance, reasonable respect, and adherence to the job description in exchange for a fair wage and standard benefits. 3. Don’t play favorites. Avoid assigning friends plum assignments and not-so-close colleagues the grunt work. Now is the time to bring out those leadership and collaboration skills to encourage everyone to do their best work and meet deadlines. Remind the team of short and long-term project objectives, and celebrate when each one is met.

This ties in closely to the above point. In order to be a better leader, you must be sure to remember that the people you are leading are not simply a means to your own end. No one wants to follow a leader that does not see them as an integral part of the cause, company, or team’s development. To be a great leader, you should abandon the idea that the maintenance of your authority is one of the most important tasks at hand. You must allow the people that you lead to develop alongside you.
Your teams look up to you and if you want them to give them their all, you will have to be passionate about it too. When your teammates see you getting your hands dirty, they will also give their best shot. It will also help you to gain the respect of your subordinates and infuse new energy in your team members, which helps them to perform better. If they feel that you are not fully committed or lacks passion, then it would be an uphill task for the leader to motivate your followers to achieve the goal.

This means proactively asking to set up a meeting or a Skype call. Be sure to make clear that you’ll rearrange your schedule for the conversation — any time works for you. After all, you’re asking for their help — not the other way around.
Control. At the beginning of a team’s life or your tenure as the team leader, when you do not yet have the insight into the team’s capabilities, the right approach is to exert authority and control. It is far easier to start tight and loosen control as needed.
Leadership involves making sound — and sometimes difficult — decisions, creating and articulating a clear vision, establishing achievable goals and providing followers with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve those goals.

Self-Awareness. You have an intimate knowledge of your inner emotional state. You know your strengths and your weaknesses. You know when you’re working in flow and you know when you’re over worked. You know yourself, including your capabilities and your limitations, which allows you to push yourself to your maximum potential.
Even when things look bleak and your followers start to feel disheartened, try to stay positive. This does not mean viewing things through rose-colored glasses. It simply means maintaining a sense of optimism and hope in the face of challenges.
4. Engagement. Great business leaders are able to get all members of their teams engaged. They do this by offering them challenge, seeking their ideas and contributions and providing them with recognition for their contributions.
Situational theory also appeared as a reaction to the trait theory of leadership. Social scientists argued that history was more than the result of intervention of great men as Carlyle suggested. Herbert Spencer (1884) (and Karl Marx) said that the times produce the person and not the other way around.[40] This theory assumes that different situations call for different characteristics; according to this group of theories, no single optimal psychographic profile of a leader exists. According to the theory, “what an individual actually does when acting as a leader is in large part dependent upon characteristics of the situation in which he functions.”[41]
I have found the most effective managers to have varying amounts of the following three components, typically beginning with specific and deep domain expertise and morphing into motivation and organizational skills as they get more senior.
Embrace Self-Expression – Don’t be afraid to ask questions, speak openly and honestly, and give praise when it’s deserved (or simply needed). Giving up a little control over your words might cause people to open up and connect with you.
People also struggle with the concept of how being a leader is different from being a manager. You may have heard the idea that ‘leaders do the right thing, and managers do things right’. This is a fairly delicate distinction, and many leaders are also managers (and vice versa). Perhaps the key difference is that leaders are expected to create and communicate a compelling vision, often associated with change. Managers, on the other hand, are perhaps more often associated with maintaining the status quo.
For example, most schools today have very limited budgets, making it difficult to pay for innovative new programs. When Margaret Chiu, principal of Galileo High School, finds a new program she thinks will benefit her students, she doesn’t waste time lamenting the lack of funding. She gets busy. She immediately begins thinking of who in the community she can ask to help support and pay for the program. has created partnerships with businesses, local colleges, and health care professionals that help enrich her school’s curriculum.
Become an Orientation Leader – Orientation Leaders are responsible for greeting incoming students during orientation. They engage with the new students, share their experiences at USG and lead their group to their workshops. As an Orientation Leader, I really learned a lot about how to present myself to new people, and engage with them.
A good leader surrounds themselves with good people, they do not accept inferior performance, and while they coach and mentor to improve performance, they make the required tough decisions to resolve performance issue.
The most junior eat first, followed in rank order, with the leaders eating last. This isn’t a rule, they simply do this because in the Marines, they believe that the responsibility of a leader is to put others’ needs above their own.
On game day, it’s important to look your opponents in the eye, shake their hands, and to show that your focused on the game, not whether or not the other team’s point guard is a jerk. Even if you feel someone on the other team acted unfairly, take it up with your coach or a ref as the situation dictates, but avoid name calling and foul language.
For example, one group is the Great Man Theory, a category that originated in the 19th century and stresses that great leaders were men born to the task. Another group is the Trait Theory, which dates to the mid-20th century and also centers on the idea that some people are born with the traits that make them great leaders, such as integrity and self-confidence.
Show your students you care. To be a good classroom leader, you have to prove that you care about your students’ success. Be kind and approachable in the classroom, so they respect you but aren’t afraid to ask questions.
