When Gallup asked over 10,000 adults to describe the leader who had the most positive impact on their lives, trust emerged as one of the top four responses. We know what it means to trust someone, but what separates trustworthy leaders from untrustworthy ones?
As a Level 5 Leader, you don’t believe you are perfect. You must, however, believe in yourself, and be convinced that you have what it takes to succeed and that you can get better. You are always looking for new ways to develop your leadership qualities and take your game to the next level.
If you and your team dread the thought of one on ones, it’s probably because they were wasted on status updates. There are plenty of places and methods for getting project updates (email, chat/IM, IDoneThis, Basecamp, etc), but no other time to cover good topics in your one on ones. Leaders and managers both need to understand how to build and manage a team. They need to know how to recruit effectively, and bring people ‘on board’ through induction processes. They also need to understand the importance of performance management, both on a regular basis, and to manage poor performance.
In the scientific community especially, it isn’t enough for a manager to have only broad, general knowledge. We need our managers to have expert professional knowledge and judgement in their field, so they can have a deep understanding of the problems at hand and the ability to develop ideas and solutions to address those problems. It’s then their responsibility to utilize their management skills and deploy new methods that find solutions.
A leader has to be a person capable of juggling many huge demands at a time, they have to consider the opinions, needs, and wants of all around them. They need to be a person not only capable of making difficult decisions, but the right difficult decision. At the same time, they need to know how to look after their team, while pushing them forward to achieve greatness.
Another crucial element of great leadership is “brain” that is synonymous with intellect or “canniness.” It is the ability to separate the wheat from the chaff, and “make smart decisions in a complex and rapidly changing world.”
Set a timeline for when you want to achieve your objective. If you don’t know when you will achieve your objective by, then it’s hard to know whether you have failed. Give yourself a timeline that is difficult but doable. Winning a Tour de France from scratch in two years is not reasonable, but booking a comedy gig in front of at least 20 paying customers probably is.
5. Be yourself. Although “be yourself” may sound like trite advice, the most respected leaders are personable and genuine. Stepping into a role that requires managerial skills doesn’t mean you need to adopt a false persona. Your colleagues would likely see right through that, anyway.
Even when things look bleak and your followers start to feel disheartened, try to stay positive. This does not mean viewing things through rose-colored glasses. It simply means maintaining a sense of optimism and hope in the face of challenges.

Collaborate. When the team is performing effectively, effective team leaders know when to get out of the way and hand over the remote control to the team. In this style of leadership, you will increasingly be collaborating as a first amongst equals in a web of mutual accountability.
The “how to be a better leader” test: How much control do employees have over how they accomplish their job? Leaders may give a broad discretion within established company processes. To be a better leader, you may want to work with trusted team members on establishing those processes.
Reward your hard workers with prizes. A prize, whether it’s the latest technological gadget or just a pair of free movie tickets, can give your employees the incentive they need to hard, and will make them think you’re a cool boss.
When a company has a positive culture, employees are more motivated and confident in their work. It’s through supportive leaders that a company finds the most success. Have you not utilized your skills as much as you would like to? Are you trying to become a more well-rounded individual? Whatever your reason for wanting to succeed, use these motivations as the cornerstone of your desire to work hard and achieve more.
