Dedicate a few minutes every day to imagining your success. Imagine yourself in a movie in which you are successful. What are you doing in the movie? What is your success like? Savor the feeling of your success, and use it as motivation to stoke your fire.

That’s how you open up. Pour out all you got from inside you. Give all you have ideas, thoughts, plans. Feel the vulnerability and learn to like it. When you pour all your ideas out you will need new ones. Where do new ideas come from? From critics who want to tear you down, from well-meaning supporters and from people you least expect.

Think of all the great leaders, and you will that most of them are also great communicators. That is not a mere coincidence. It is cause and effect. Great leadership means great communication, and vice versa.

Show your students you care. To be a good classroom leader, you have to prove that you care about your students’ success. Be kind and approachable in the classroom, so they respect you but aren’t afraid to ask questions.

In 1945, Ohio State University conducted a study which investigated observable behaviors portrayed by effective leaders, They would then identify if these particular behaviors reflective in leadership effectiveness. They were able to narrow their findings to two identifiable distinctions [34] The first dimension was identified as “Initiating Structure”, which described how a leader clearly and accurately communicates with their followers, defines goals, and determine how tasks are performed. These are considered “task oriented” behaviors The second dimension is “Consideration”, which indicates the leader’s ability to build an interpersonal relationship with their followers, to establish a form of mutual trust. These are considered “social oriented” behaviors.[35]

A commanding leader can make decisions quickly. They don’t need to go through any discussions to come up with a decision most of the time. This saves time and is helpful especially during a crisis. Commanding leaders are often respected and are rarely challenged by the team.

The transactional leader (Burns, 1978)[58] is given power to perform certain tasks and reward or punish for the team’s performance. It gives the opportunity to the manager to lead the group and the group agrees to follow his lead to accomplish a predetermined goal in exchange for something else. Power is given to the leader to evaluate, correct, and train subordinates when productivity is not up to the desired level, and reward effectiveness when expected outcome is reached.

Start “seeing” more than “doing.” As you have probably started gathering, being a leader is more of an innate quality than a series of actions. To lead a situation, you need to see it arising, see how you can help it, and see the path it’s going down. Let your team take care of the doing. You just gotta have a vision.

Listen. To be an effective leader, one must listen to what those around you are saying, and then make a decision on what you have heard. To listen is very difficult, but one must, because the lowest of the low person in your business may say something that is effective and very important, something that you would never have thought of. So… learn to listen carefully, and when everyone has had their say, only then make a decision.
