There are a few different leadership styles that you should be aware of. Your leadership style is how you’re being perceived, and since perception is often reality, it’s something you want to be mindful of.
If you practice consistently, you can be a great leader too. Make small changes your habits when you work with your team – wherever that may be. Most of us aren’t presidents or CEOs. But we all work with other people, and our actions always impact others. This gives every person the chance to develop leadership skills and to stand out from the crowd.
Economics writer Tim Harford studies complex systems — and finds a surprising link among the successful ones: they were built through trial and error. In this sparkling talk from TEDGlobal 2011, he asks us to embrace our randomness and start making better mistakes.
If you want to be a leader you have to be prepared to lead. It does require self-confidence. You have to be able to judge when to listen, when to think and when to decide. When you make decisions you need to stick with them through adversity if you are sure they are right, and to see them through. People like continuity. If at some point you conclude that you were wrong, you need to be big enough to change and to explain why. The best solution is to make the right decisions! It is more important to make good decisions than fast decisions.

Knowing the organization: Effective leaders know the organization’s overall purpose and goals, and the agreed-upon strategies to achieve these goals; they also know how their team fits into the big picture, and the part they play in helping the organization grow and thrive. Full knowledge of your organization – inside and out – is vital to becoming an effective leader.  
Tell them how long you’ve been teaching your course. If you’ve been teaching the same course twenty times, let them know, so they have a sense that you’ve created the best course possible. If you’re new to the classroom, however, don’t let your students know so they don’t see you as a pushover.
The Marine four-star general and leader of NATO’s coalition in Afghanistan “is probably the most complete warrior-statesman wearing a uniform today,” says a former Marine commandant. Dunford tells Fortune his first battalion commander told him the three rules to success. The first? Surround yourself with good people. “Over the years,” says Dunford, “I’ve forgotten the other two.”
So what are the qualities of a good leader? On the most basic level, leadership styles can be categorized as being manipulative, authoritative, or attractive. While all of these styles might get the job done, can you guess which one is the most effective in the long-run?
Responsive to the group’s needs: Being perceptive can also help a leader be more effective in knowing the needs of the team. Some teams value trust over creativity; others prefer a clear communicator to a great organizer. Building a strong team is easier when you know the values and goals of each individual, as well as what they need from you as their leader.
Network. Networking is making connections with people who have connections. Contrary to popular belief, networking is mutually beneficial. You offer expertise, opinion, or opportunity to someone in exchange for something back.
Remember that success does not guarantee happiness. Success is equated with achieving a goal, but don’t assume it will always bring happiness. Many people make the mistake that if they accomplish this or that, they’ll be happier. Fulfillment and satisfaction have a lot more to do with how you life than with what you do in life. Keep that in perspective.

This can vary but tends to involve good self-confidence, a lot of luck, the willingness to seize opportunities when they present themselves, planning goals and sticking to them and being observant about what others need and want in the world.
Jalichandra tells us how he works his own networks. “Business is usually all about relationships, so it goes without saying that networking has been a huge part of my success. As a CEO, a big part of my responsibility is to spend a significant amount of my time ‘outside the company.’ In other words, either meeting with or talking on the phone with people outside the company. Sometimes it’s forming important business partnerships, but most of the time, it’s just about gathering intelligence learning from my peers.”
Once you’ve set the vision and engaged other people through communication, you need to lead the delivery. That’s where a clear understanding of the end goal, and metrics and evaluation to demonstrate outcomes, are important. It’s a good idea to stay ahead of the delivery curve, setting interim goals along the way which are stretching but attainable. Much of what I’ve just described in the last three points is encapsulated by Steve Radcliffe in the model he discussed at the Leadership Conference last year: future, engage, deliver.
In the transformational leadership model, leaders set direction and help themselves and others to do the right thing to move forward. To do this they create an inspiring vision, and then motivate and inspire others to reach that vision. They also manage delivery of the vision, either directly or indirectly, and build and coach their teams to make them ever stronger.
Providing meaningful opportunities for professional development is another way principals can help teachers improve instruction. The principal should make sure that workshops and other development activities are related to the goals of the school and will help teachers better serve their students.
Practise what you preach. You must believe, in order for people to follow and buy into your vision. Show you are passionate, enthusiastic and proud. People spend a large part of their lives at work, and having a leader who is genuinely excited about the future of the company is hugely motivating and inspiring.
Not only is this just a good trait to have in general, it will help you to become more successful too! Integrity can help to define who you are and how you act towards others. This can help you on your journey to success. If you are honest and have good morals, then you can trust yourself and your own success.
According to Dave Ulrich, named the most influential person in HR by HR Magazine, approximately 20% of all people are naturally-born leaders, while another 20% do not possess the necessarily skills and qualities and will never be good leaders.
Most of these traits tie directly into emotional intelligence (EQ). Leaders with high EQ are intrinsically more self aware. They understand their mental processes and know how to direct themselves. They’re more in touch with what they’re deeply passionate about. They naturally care more for others and receive more compassion in return. They’re more socially in tune.
I’m a managing partner at a NYC hedge fund and also a huge fan of classical music, so when I came across this TED talk by Itay Talgam, “Lead Like The Great Conductors” I knew that I had to watch. The knowledge that I got from this talk was invaluable, and I encourage you to watch as well.
Look at what the numbers are telling you. Did you ever have an idea about something but were afraid that the numbers (i.e. metrics) wouldn’t back it up? That fear is normal, but it’s a good idea to let the numbers give you guidance. Better to be wrong and adapt than to stubbornly insist you’re doing it right when the numbers don’t back that up.
The Fiedler contingency model bases the leader’s effectiveness on what Fred Fiedler called situational contingency. This results from the interaction of leadership style and situational favorability (later called situational control). The theory defined two types of leader: those who tend to accomplish the task by developing good relationships with the group (relationship-oriented), and those who have as their prime concern carrying out the task itself (task-oriented).[43] According to Fiedler, there is no ideal leader. Both task-oriented and relationship-oriented leaders can be effective if their leadership orientation fits the situation. When there is a good leader-member relation, a highly structured task, and high leader position power, the situation is considered a “favorable situation”. Fiedler found that task-oriented leaders are more effective in extremely favorable or unfavorable situations, whereas relationship-oriented leaders perform best in situations with intermediate favorability.
Define the meaning of success as you see it. You cannot have success if you do not know what it means for you. Everyone views success differently and using someone else standard for success is like eating another person’s lunch and expecting to love it. Set clear goals and be realistic.
There are different styles of leadership and they can (nearly) all be good. The important thing is to be yourself: know your own personality so that you can be authentic in the way you engage with other people and the way you use your authority. Understand how you as an individual can best have positive impact and influence with others and try to understand how they perceive you. Always be clear in communicating your values, what you care about and what you stand for – through your behaviour as well as your words.
Remember: Leadership is not an “action.” It is not a “solution” or a mask you wear in the moment. It emanates from who you are. Showing compassion first and setting that foundation is what will not only reassure those around you of your confidence and ability to lead, but will help keep you in a positive state, allowing you to make the best decisions possible.
Be Authentic – If possible, try to stay in touch with your inner, real self. Recognizing both your talents and your shortcomings can be an important path to authenticity. When you’re aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and when you acknowledge what you don’t know, people are more likely to offer their help.
1. Integrity. They are people who are respected and worth listening to. I find in general due to all of the economic difficulties, employees prioritize and seek leaders and organizations that are honest and meet their commitments.
The last one is the LEADER. He ensures that no one is left behind. He keeps the pack unified and on the same path. He is always ready to run in any direction to protect & serves as the ‘bodyguard’ to the entire group.
