Having a certain level of knowledge will help you feel confident and more leader-esque. While you can do without it, it’s a matter of time before someone else with more knowledge and charisma comes along and takes the title out from under your feet. So whatever, whoever you’re looking to lead, start studying up! It’ll pay off in the long run.

Set the tone of your leadership style from the outset. Be confident, self-assured and respectful with everyone you meet. Speak as you want to be spoken to, and remember to listen. The first few weeks is when people develop their perceptions of you, so hard to earn their trust. Staff want to look up to their leader, who must set out the desired tone, values and culture from the start; this will be key to effective change and progress.

The third – personal leadership – is an “inner” level and concerns a person’s growth toward greater leadership presence, knowhow and skill. Working on one’s personal leadership has three aspects: (1) Technical knowhow and skill (2) Developing the right attitude toward other people – which is the basis of servant leadership (3) Psychological self-mastery – the foundation for authentic leadership.

First, let’s consider the difference between managing and leading. Managing involves overseeing daily, tactical office functions and activities, whereas leading involves building on the overall capabilities of your team. Management is about navigating or attempting to resolve everyday issues, while leadership is about changing the mindsets of your team and how they view those challenges.

Leaders are not born they are developed through hard work and a constant focus on improving all areas of their leadership. People are complicated and leading them is an evolving challenge. Give yourself fully to this challenge.

Leadership is something that is continuously developed over time, through mentoring and staying curious. The best leaders are always learning and are hungry to be the best they can be for their employees.

Be firm, but be kind. Since you’re leading, you’re the one that needs to set the rules and boundaries. It’s up to you to establish some system, rhyme and reason to the situation. To do so, you must be firm in your convictions and keep to your stance. However, being dictatorial will instigate a revolution. Be logical and understanding when you assert your rule.

The authors think Xi is a good leader. He is not. He is a dictator- good or bad, history will decide. People are not following him voluntarily.
