When I looked back on my days as an athlete, I understood what was different. I remembered what (or who) made me push myself even when I want to. The difference was, as an athlete, I had structured days and a coach to report to. Structure keeps us focused and a coach keeps pushing and challenging us.
So does this mean these are the only three common themes across leadership? The answer is absolutely not. There are other ideas around things like vision, communication, and responsibilities that are also key parts of the leadership skill-set. Depending on which approach we consider and how it is applied, however, those skills may be subsets of the three themes we have discussed here or mixed in with others. These three themes are important because they are aligned with some of the key ideas of servant leadership, which is what we will begin looking at next time.
Ralph eventually learns to listen to Piggy and comes to rely on him often; in fact, on his own he eventually comes to many of the same conclusions Piggy understood from the beginning. Unfortunately, a lot of valuable time is lost as Ralph tries to work with Jack instead of fighting against Jack’s eventual takeover of the island. Ralph accepts his leadership role, but the role did not really suit him for some time. By the time he kind of figures it out, it is too late.
All great leaders are great communicators. That means the ability to transfer the content of your mind into the minds of others. With no error. With no confusion. With complete understanding and accuracy. Leaders train themselves to become master communicators.
Good relationships are based on trust, commitment and engagement, and a good manager’s essential role is to build these relationships for the benefit of the organisation, so that the tasks that are set are completed with enthusiasm, effectively, on time and with the energy to do more.
Last but certainly not the least, is empathy. Leaders should develop empathy with their followers. Unfortunately, most leaders follow a dictatorial style and neglect empathy altogether. Due to this, they fail to make a closer connection with their followers. Understanding the problems of your followers and feeling their pain is the first step to become an effective leader. Even that is not enough until you work hard and provide your followers with the suitable solution to their problems.
It is both scary and exhilarating. Once you decide to become a leader in your life, you cast off the shackles of fear and dependency that hold most people back and pursue life with a positive attitude. With your own hands, you design your own future. You set yourself fully on the path to becoming everything you are capable of becoming.
A leader has to have experience in the trenches,andnotonlythat, but to also· have the confidence in himself and his subordinates to accomplish the necessary goals for success. That comes by looking at those under him/her as equals. Also , that person has to exude positive qualities and ambition to be the best one can be in whatever one hopes to accomplish.

He has now returned to the financial data firm he founded but is hardly giving up his high-wattage policy activism — leading campaigns for gun control and against smoking and obesity.

Integrated Psychological theory began to attract attention after the publication of James Scouller’s Three Levels of Leadership model (2011). Scouller argued that the older theories offer only limited assistance in developing a person’s ability to lead effectively. He pointed out, for example, that:
“You need the humility to remind yourself that you’ve got to get better at everything you do,” insisted Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos. “I don’t know about you, but I’m never done growing my company or myself.”
Share your vision. As a leader, you can see the bigger issues, but you can also see how things could be so much better if we could just remove those obstacles. To get people to help you in changing things, you need to share that positive vision with them. Inspire them. Motivate them. Guide them. Show them how their actions are bringing everyone closer to that dream.
Leaders know that patience is not about waiting around for results, it’s about following through and executing the plan, not giving up when you face hurdles, working hard and learning how to enjoy the journey as much as the destination.
Employees, company stakeholders and the wider business community want their leaders to be “personally present”. As a result, the communications channels which a leader chooses to utilise have to reflect this in order for their communications to be effective.
These two roles may seem paradoxical, but they really aren’t. The path is ‘how’ you get there; this can and will constantly change. But ‘who’ you are and what you stand for stays the same. If you believe in it, you stand by that.
As you gain experience supporting and guiding the work of others, challenges will grow in complexity and ambiguity. One consultant describes leadership development as moving outward in a series of concentric circles, with the most basic leadership activities at the center and the most challenging work of senior leadership and organizational strategy and development at the far outer rings. Continually seek challenges that move you beyond the known and comfortable areas into new and increasingly complex problems.
Personal Story: The first job I ever had was taking foreign exchange students to California attractions like Disneyland and the beach. Awesome right?! Well my manager was a huge jerk, which made an otherwise perfect summer job completely miserable. Even though I was only 16, it wasn’t difficult for me to see why his turnover rate was so high. I bet you can guess why I quit too.
It’s important that leaders at every level of the business successfully engage their team with the business mission. This is because employees are more engaged when they understand their place in the bigger picture. There are great and inspiring leaders everywhere. Anywhere you see a team that works well together, a team that consistently works at their best no matter the pressure, a team of people that are confident and determined; you are seeing a team with a great leader.
The third – personal leadership – is an “inner” level and concerns a person’s growth toward greater leadership presence, knowhow and skill. Working on one’s personal leadership has three aspects: (1) Technical knowhow and skill (2) Developing the right attitude toward other people – which is the basis of servant leadership (3) Psychological self-mastery – the foundation for authentic leadership.
Without followers, there are no leaders. Leaders therefore need skills in working with others on a one-to-one and group basis, and a range of tools in their armoury to deal with a wide range of situations. Leaders flex their leadership style according to circumstances.
