Knowing your areas of weakness does not make you weak; on the contrary, it allows you to delegate to others who have those abilities, in order to achieve the common goal. Rather than clinging to the false belief that they can do it all, great leaders hire people who complement, rather than supplement, their skills. Working on your areas of weaknesses will improve your leadership ability – and recognizing them makes you more human.
Tough-mindedness. Good leaders are practical, logical, and to-the-point. They tend to be low in sentimental attachments and comfortable with criticism. They are usually insensitive to hardship and overall, are very poised.

In his research, Mann has found that, after individuals point out things they’re happy with in a problematic situation, they don’t feel so strongly about the problem and are better able to think clearly and solve it. The same is true when a leader needs to improve his or her strategy. If you or a team member notices a particular course of action you’ve taken that just isn’t working, figure out some things you’ve done in the past that have worked.
Top-down leaders driven by hubris have a hard time detaching from their own inner voices to consider other voices, because they think they’re always right. Great leaders are present and in the moment. They don’t need to talk over others to get their point across. To quote former Louisiana Kitchen CEO Cheryl Bachelder:

Strong leaders tap into employees’ desire to learn by providing constant access to the right training that meets their personal and company needs. Creating a strong learning culture across your teams doesn’t only improve employees capabilities, it increases team motivation and engagement with the business mission.
This is far more complex than it actually sounds. Good communication skills are essential for a great leader. You may very well understand the cave of crazy that is your brain, but that doesn’t mean that you can adequately take the ideas out of it and explain them to someone else.
Lamar Anderson, Director of Product and Programs at Owens Corning, knows this to be true. “I treat everyone with the same level of respect, from the cleaning crew to the CEO. I stop to speak to many people throughout my day, just to say hello. I create an environment where many people feel comfortable opening up to me about very personal things. My peers and higher-ups can see for themselves how people interact with me, and it is easier for someone to do something for you when they genuinely like you as a person and respect you in return.”
On the other hand, if you’re a hard working, driven person who is willing to take risks to achieve your goals, people who are also like that will see you as a kindred spirit. The key is to not be afraid to approach people and make friends.

In a world that is changing more rapidly than ever, we should seek leaders who can protect and serve the interests of the people they are supposed to represent. This means not just criticizing the failings of weak leaders, but also highlighting the successes of strong ones.
Every manager creates meaning in different ways. Every manager has their own personal vision for what they’re trying to do. One person might be motivated by scientific discovery alone. Another might have a personal tie to a particular project.

Don’t criticize your coach in front of your teammates. Though you may disagree with your coach’s actions, you can talk to him about it. Discussing it with your team can make everyone angry, and can make your team fall apart for lack of strong leadership.
