Leadership is defined through action. Therefore, in developing your own skills, you have to act in ways that are fitting to your leadership vision and your self – all the time. We can all name many actions of other people whom we admire, but what inspires us is the integrity that gives these actions meaning.
“Thankfulness is fundamentally related to positivity and negativity,” Edwards explains. “It is so much easier to be positive about your life and the things that are going on in it right now when you are grateful.” If you’re reading this, you’ve definitely got a number of things to be thankful By constantly reflecting on them (perhaps in a gratitude journal), you become a more cheerful person, which makes other people more likely to support you and your efforts.
It’s easy to burn out when you are very motivated. Observe yourself to recognize any signs of tiredness and take time to rest. Your body and mind rest when you schedule relaxation and fun time into your weekly calendar. Do diverse tasks, keep switching between something creative and logical, something physical and still, working alone and with a team. Switch locations. Meditate, or just take deep breaths, close your eyes, or focus on one thing for five minutes.
While leadership is unique to everyone, there are some common ways to define the term. Peter Economy, also known as “The Leadership Guy,” listed the qualities of today’s best leadership in an Inc.com article. According to Economy, leadership embodies:
If you have friends or family members who always make you feel bad about yourself, limit the time you spend with them. Also, make sure to identify relationships that are not helping you to move towards your goals, that stress you out, or that require too much of your time and energy without being reciprocal.
Individual and team development are important activities carried out by transformational leaders. To develop a team, leaders must first understand team dynamics. Several well-established and popular models describe this, such as Belbin’s Team Roles approach, and Bruce Tuckman’s Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing theory .
The best school leaders are confident communicators and storytellers. They are great persuaders and listeners, adept at describing ‘the story of their school’ to any audience. They are also great motivators. “Getting people to do things and go that extra mile lies at the heart of good leadership,” says Kenny Frederick, former headteacher at George Green’s School, Tower Hamlets.
Passion for your organisation includes how your organisation ontributes to society, the value it adds to customers. Look beyond your mission and vision to find a higher purpose that will motivate and inspire your people.
In the article What is a Leader I’ve defined it as “a credible person who can alters one’s thought, feelings or actions in a manner that enlists others to pursue the accomplishment of a common goal.” Thus, a good leader is someone that can sustain the enlistment of others in order to pursue a common goal.
The “how to be a better leader” test: Ask five employees what the vision and mission of your company is. If you receive blank stares or five different answers, you may be a boss. To be a better leader, it may be worthwhile to home in on your company’s vision and mission, and begin creating a company culture that reflects those values.
Here’s an interesting one. During my tenure as an upper-level manager, I tended to avoid failure at all costs. Early on, I started a company on my own that went belly up. So, in the corporate world, I shunned any trace of failure–even if it meant letting projects go on too long. I was right about having an attitude of success, but wrong about the micro-failures. Good managers pull the plug at precisely the right time to free up staff for better things.
Never forget that achieving a goal is based on creating routines. Say you want to write a 300-page book. That’s your goal. Your system to achieve that goal could be to write four pages a day–that’s your routine.
It’s not about winning a popularity contest. You don’t have to be liked to be respected. It’s about serving and influencing others regardless of their job title in the effort to achieve a certain goal. More than anything, it’s about creating harmony in an environment where people want to work together.
Be friendly with all members of the team. Don’t play favorites, and work to get to know everyone on your team, from the star player to the slowest member on the JV squad. This will show that you care about everyone who makes the team so unique and strong.
A company has to make money to stay in business. That means bringing money in the door, and it means spending less than you bring in. Depending on your function in the organization, you may have more influence on one area or the other, but you need to understand both. You can help your company, your employees, and yourself be getting better at managing the company’s money.
Earn your team’s respect: Always lead by example. As a team member, it’s a lot easier to get behind a leader who is in the trenches with you. Understanding what your team does and how hard they work will help develop that respect. Also remember that honesty leads to credibility with your team. If you realize you’ve messed up, admitting it quickly will be admired.

Nobody likes dealing with drama. But sometimes it’s necessary to keep small problems from growing into something overwhelming. Leaders must be able to address dysfunction in their team with consistent policies and a strong stand expressed calmly and confidently.

You can find another thousand articles on the web that discuss the topic, and a thousand more will be written tomorrow. With such a broad subject and with so many things that can play a role in making us happy, it can be difficult to boil it down to a short list of things that anyone can read and apply in their lives.
Meanwhile, a seemingly never-ending flow of news reports catalogue US President Donald Trump’s alleged lies and question his fitness for office. Conversely, there has been a growing trend for politicians around the world to back or block policies for moral, as opposed to economic reasons.
The principles in this book are not remarkably new and the dictionary definitions at the start of every section seem a little out of place. The tendency for the points to spill into each other was also a little distracting. But the inspiring stories in every section were a nice touch.
Learning to be a leader isn’t easy because it takes a conscious commitment and consistent effort to develop one’s business leadership skills. But on the positive side, anyone who is willing to make the effort can become a good leader.
Identify a problem. Look around and find ways to make the world a better place. Observe your surroundings and listen to people. How can you help? What challenged has yet to be answered? What could use organization?
