Kurt Lewin, Ronald Lipitt, and Ralph White developed in 1939 the seminal work on the influence of leadership styles and performance. The researchers evaluated the performance of groups of eleven-year-old boys under different types of work climate. In each, the leader exercised his influence regarding the type of group decision making, praise and criticism (feedback), and the management of the group tasks (project management) according to three styles: authoritarian, democratic, and laissez-faire.[33]
Self-assessment: Effective leaders periodically take stock of their personal strengths and shortcomings. They ask: “What do I like to do? What am I really good at?” “What are my areas of weakness, and what do I dislike doing?” 
But you can only lead if other people are prepared to follow. That means you have to win and retain their respect, not just for your position but for you as a person, for your experience, skills and competence. A leader has to have a strong rapport with, and understanding of, the organisation and the people he or she is leading: what they want, and what they will accept if they can’t have what they want. Emotional intelligence and intuition are important in forming these links.
You should never expect others to do it for you, not even your partner, friend or boss. They are all busy with their own needs. No one will make you happy or achieve your goals for you. It’s all on you.
Brown does a wonderful job of showing how the same qualities that seem so appealing in strong leaders can lead, in the mildest cases, to bad decisions—and, in the most extreme cases, to death and suffering on a massive scale. These qualities can be boiled down to a belief, on the part of the leader, that he or she—and usually he—is the only one who knows what the country needs, and the only one who can deliver it.
Last but not least, great leaders know their team inside out. They know where the strengths and skills gaps are and how to best structure their teams for success. A third characteristic of great leaders–or, perhaps, group of characteristics–is having courage, tenacity, and patience. Having the courage to stand alone, the tenacity to not succumb to pressure, and the patience to keep fighting until you win the day–and sometimes being able to do all three at the same time–is something you will have to develop if you want to be a true and successful leader.
1. Integrity. They are people who are respected and worth listening to. I find in general due to all of the economic difficulties, employees prioritize and seek leaders and organizations that are honest and meet their commitments.
4. Start engaging with people you admire: Having people you admire and look up to in your life can be a great resource for learning and motivation. Reaching out to successful people you admire and respect is a wise career strategy. Start hanging out with people who are dependable and reliable, make the relationships around you, people you can admire. Always choose relationship should be based on respect and trust, make sure that their words are matched with actions and deeds. and it means surround yourself by people you admire and respect. If you want to get ahead, one of the best ways to do this is to find out from others how they got there and did it. I don’t think that people take enough time to tell people who inspire them what an impact they make on their lives!

Consequently, people can have confidence that their leader won’t  punish them for their efforts if they take reasonable and responsible risks that are well thought out and well-founded. They are accountable and responsible to deserve their leader’s confidence and trust.

Not only do leaders have a clear vision, they also communicate it so their followers understand the big picture. It can be as simple as giving progress updates and reminders about the importance of your goals or as elaborate as team workshops to immerse everyone in your mission. As a leader it is your responsibility to decide what method of communication works best and implement it.

So it doesn’t have to do so much with whether or not that physician was incompetent, but do we like that person and how they interacted?
You have to be the one to discover your passion. Take some alone time and think about what you enjoy doing the most. Think about what leaves you fulfilled when you’re done doing it. Don’t try to force it, though. Your passion should come naturally to you.
When it comes to accountability, you need to follow the approach highlighted by Arnold H Glasow when he said, “A good leader takes little more than his share of the blame and little less than his share of the credit.” Make sure that every one of your subordinates is accountable for what they are doing. If they do well, give them a pat on the back but if they struggle, make them realize their mistakes and work together to improve. Holding them accountable for their actions will create a sense of responsibility among your subordinates and they will go about the business more seriously.
