Openness means being able to listen to new ideas, even if they do not conform to the usual way of thinking. Good leaders are able to suspend judgment while listening to others’ ideas, as well as accept new ways of doing things that someone else thought of. Openness builds mutual respect and trust between leaders and followers, and it also keeps the team well supplied with new ideas that can further its vision.
Intuitiveness. Rapid changes in the world today combined with information overload result in an inability to “know” everything. In other words, reasoning and logic will not get you through all situations. In fact, more and more leaders are learning to the value of using their intuition and trusting their “gut” when making decisions.
Tell them how long you’ve been teaching your course. If you’ve been teaching the same course twenty times, let them know, so they have a sense that you’ve created the best course possible. If you’re new to the classroom, however, don’t let your students know so they don’t see you as a pushover.

Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com, has said that one of the key elements of being a good business leader is the capacity to tell the hard truths. “Leaders struggle with this problem all the time,” says David Thomas. “From a leadership point of view, you always want to move toward telling the hard truths and helping people cope with the realities of change. But as a manager, you might be more inclined to minimize the complexity of a situation so things can run smoothly for as long as possible. It’s often a judgment call.”

Although John F. Kennedy was president of the United States for only 1,036 days before being assassinated in 1963, his legacy continues to influence politics. President Kennedy was a gifted orator whose speeches, as The Atlantic described them, “were filled with phrases that seemed designed to be carved in stone.” Although his first year in the White House included several failed attempts to topple Cuba’s Communist regime, President Kennedy used his charismatic leadership style to prevent the U.S. from bombing Cuba and reach a peaceful end to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. Remember that success does not guarantee happiness. Success is equated with achieving a goal, but don’t assume it will always bring happiness. Many people make the mistake that if they accomplish this or that, they’ll be happier. Fulfillment and satisfaction have a lot more to do with how you approach life than with what you do in life. Keep that in perspective.
Show your commitment to your team’s betterment. For your organization to grow, everyone has to get better. This has nothing to do with just you being great — you have to make your team great. Ideally, when the task is done the team will say, “We did it!”, not you exclaiming, “I did it!” It’s about the whole of the group, not the one.
Courage is a fickle thing, but incredibly important in a great leader. A leader needs to be able to stand alone, and stand up for what they believe in. Care about your followers. Just because they are not leaders doesn’t mean they are idiots. They’ll be able to tell if you’re compassionate and genuinely concerned for them. David Thomas stresses the importance of “multimodality” in communication. “What you say is only the beginning,” he states. “Your behavior, your actions, and your decisions are also ways of communicating, and leaders have to learn how to create a consistent message through all of these. It’s been said many times, but leaders lead by example.”

1. Confidence. If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will. I hear leaders worrying that if they show too much confidence, others will think them arrogant. The reality is people want to know what you know for sure — and what you don’t. Having the confidence to say “I don’t know” is a powerful skill.

Who says leadership is a one-way relationship? As you work toward developing some of these leadership qualities, don’t forget to look to your followers for feedback and inspiration. Pay attention to the things that have been effective in the past and always be on the lookout for new ways to inspire, motivate and reward group members.
A particular danger in these situations is that people or organizations that are being managed by such an individual or group think they’re being led; but they’re not. There may actually be no leadership at all, with no one setting a vision and no one being inspired. This can cause serious problems in the long term.

These key traits will put you on the road to genuine connections with the members of your team.
