Group members must have and feel the support of their leader, the tools needed to do their jobs properly must be available to them, they must have recognition for their efforts and know that there is a person paying attention in order to correct bad habits. That is all part of a leadership which serves the team, and not the opposite.
At the onset you need to be opened-minded and willing to put in hard work! But if you’re passionate about becoming a great leader, then it can be an enjoyable adventure. Becoming a good leader does not mean becoming perfect, it’s more like understanding your imperfections and learning to work with them.
As the CEO of a scientific-based enterprise, I can see very clearly the differences between an effective employee and an effective manager. And while there are certainly overlapping skills and knowledge sets, an effective manager needs to have a few extra components in order to be more than just a domain expert—and become a successful leader.
People also struggle with the concept of how being a leader is different from being a manager. You may have heard the idea that ‘leaders do the right thing, and managers do things right’. This is a fairly delicate distinction, and many leaders are also managers (and vice versa). Here’s an example story of poor leadership: An airline’s forks kept disappearing and no one knew why. After an investigation, it was discovered the dishwashers were throwing them away because they had trouble with adequately cleaning them and they were scared of punishment if they returned dirty forks (and would thusly be reprimanded).[1] If you’re too dictatorial, your team will throw away your forks. Marcia Parrott, principal at Miraloma Elementary School, pulled her staff out of a time-consuming training program that was not meeting their needs. The techniques taught in the training program were not compatible with the reading program used at the school and the program instructors were not able to help the teachers integrate the two programs. Although she had to defend her decision to the school district, she was adamant that her teachers not spend their time on a program they could not use to help students.

So what can you do embrace these valued leadership qualities and become a stronger and more effective leader? Transformational leaders are usually described as enthusiastic, passionate, genuine and energetic. These leaders are not just concerned about helping the group achieve its goals; they also care about helping each member of the group reach his or her full potential. 
In business, individuals who exhibit these leadership qualities can ascend to executive management or C-level positions, such as CEO, CIO or president. Noteworthy individuals who have exhibited strong leadership in the technology industry include Apple founder Steve Jobs, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.
Psychology Today agrees: The best estimates offered by research are that leadership is about one-third born and two-thirds made, although having inborn qualities such as being assertive, extroverted, empathic and having the degree of social intelligence that allows a person to accurately size up social situations and understand social processes does make it easier to learn how to be a good leader.
If you are working closely with a team, use them to your advantage. What roles do they feel best suited for? How is their time being utilized? What ideas do they have that have yet to be implemented? In many cases, growth is a matter of rearranging and refining — not necessarily a problem at all.
However, over the past several decades, we’ve seen a shift from physical-labor oriented jobs to thought and connection centered work. Today’s workers are not simply motivated the same way as their parents’ parents were. This is common knowledge, yet we insist on managing this new breed of workers as if they were still working on the factory floor.
The leader is the one responsible for taking the risks that others are not willing to take. They are confident enough to make a decision, and if they make a mistake, the leader must have the courage to rectify, assume their guilt and take the right path, without blaming it on the team. Good leaders know how to get ahead of their time, they see opportunities where others can’t and know how to spread the enthusiasm for their vision to try to make it real.
The winning formula for business success will have been created many years ago – but it’s important to remember how the business started. Maybe you can show them that you are worthy of there respect. You could show them that you are smart enough, and/or you could show them that you are strong enough and let them know that they can trust you.
4. Engagement. Great business leaders are able to get all members of their teams engaged. They do this by offering them challenge, seeking their ideas and contributions and providing them with recognition for their contributions.

Ask questions. As a leader, you’re sort of untouchable. People may not come to you because you’re the big man of the organization. They don’t want to pipe up and cause a ruckus. Know that you’re dealing with a constant level of perceived intimidation that you need to break down. How do you do this? Ask questions first!
Extraordinary means investing your money in assets, not liabilities. The wealthy don’t become wealthy by sitting on their hands — they spend enormous amounts of time becoming extremely financially literate and make their money work for them.
