Think of the big picture. As you’re solving problems (or simply improving what’s already satisfactory), you might notice patterns, and wonder if many of those issues are symptoms of a deeper, bigger problem or construct. Thoreau once said, “For every thousand hacking at the leaves of evil, one is hacking at the root.” Take a step back and try to find the root. The deeper matter is often not something anybody can solve alone; it’ll require a group effort, which is where your role as a leader comes into play.

It is necessary that you have some understanding of human behavior and why people will act in a certain manner as opposed to responding in another way. In a context that fosters ethics and honesty, observation and active listening will provide you with all of the answers. Of course, some advance knowledge of human behaviour is essential for you to interpret the situation more accurately thus minimizing misunderstandings and consequently increasing your ability to make the appropriate decisions.
To all my fellow leaders, I leave you with my final thoughts for strong leadership. Listen to your team, learn together and remember to have fun along the way! As Churchill wisely said: “You cannot deal with the most serious things in the world unless you understand the most amusing.”

Over and over, I have found that the keys to success are a single piece of information, a single idea at the right time, in the right situation, and change your life. I have also learned that the great truths are simple.
Whatever challenges they face, great principals don’t make excuses for why their schools can’t succeed. Instead they make it their top priority to figure out how their schools can excel, and do everything they can to make that happen.
John Kotter underscores the positive potential of facing problems head-on. “Great leadership does not mean running away from reality,” he argues. “Sometimes the hard truths might just demoralize the company, but at other times sharing difficulties can inspire people to take action that will make the situation better.”
“This strategy involves moving from a focus on what is going wrong to what is going right,” Fuda said. “Shining a light on issues and problems is an important part of transformation, but it must not become a leader’s default setting. An important mantra I have shared with almost every leader I have met is, ‘Don’t let perfect get in the way of better.'”
