Pick one thing you’re already better at than most people. Just. One. Thing. Become maniacally focused at doing that one thing. Work. Train. Learn. Practice. Evaluate. Refine. Be ruthlessly self-critical, not in a masochistic way but to ensure you continue to work to improve every aspect of that one thing.

This can vary but tends to involve good self-confidence, a lot of luck, the willingness to seize opportunities when they present themselves, planning goals and sticking to them and being observant about what others need and want in the world.

Over the past 25 years, I’ve coached a mix of executives in for profit and not-for-profit companies like Kellogg’s, Monsanto, SoCalGas, Newark City Government, The United Way, IBM, and AT&T. This energy shift won’t happen automatically; rather, leaders must make a conscious, intentional shift. Leaders play a key role in harnessing the energy of their followers to ride this new wave of economic recovery – regardless of the size of the surf.

The bureaucratic top-down leadership style i.e. “The Commanding Leader” is increasingly less effective in the ever evolving digital age where people are more connected than ever. Employees want a more collaborative approach to leadership. 41% of employees say they want their leadership to come from the company that they work for as a whole and from all employees. They want a ‘leadership-by-all’ model. This is much more than the 25% who say that leadership should only come from the company CEO, according to the KLCM report. Interestingly, Millennial employees have higher expectations of leadership from CEOs and those in Senior Management. Only 35% of Millennials prefer the ‘leadership-by-all’ model, which is 6% less than the general consensus.

Situational theory also appeared as a reaction to the trait theory of leadership. Social scientists argued that history was more than the result of intervention of great men as Carlyle suggested. Herbert Spencer (1884) (and Karl Marx) said that the times produce the person and not the other way around.[40] This theory assumes that different situations call for different characteristics; according to this group of theories, no single optimal psychographic profile of a leader exists. According to the theory, “what an individual actually does when acting as a leader is in large part dependent upon characteristics of the situation in which he functions.”[41]

Accomplishment is often associated with success, but it is not the same. Accomplishment refers to the results we desire when we attempt to reach specific goals. Basically it is the results that we plan or expect to occur. Success is the positive consequence or outcome of an achieved accomplishment.

Be educated. Education gives you the knowledge, skills, and credibility to achieve your maximum potential. In terms of financial success, statistics have shown that the more education you have (i.e. the higher degree you achieve), the more money you are likely to make.[5]
