“what is a leader? how have you exhibited outstanding leadership?”

To be successful, you need ambition. Ambitious people will see that they are capable of doing their best and being the best and what they do. If you feel that you are not good enough, or not capable, then you can be unlikely to try and reach your goals of success.
Be consistent in your interactions. If you’re very friendly during group meetings, but chilly when you pass an employee in the hall, your workers may get mixed signals and may not like you very much. It’s important to be cordial at all times–not just during the important ones.
If you want to be a leader you have to be prepared to lead. It does require self-confidence. You have to be able to judge when to listen, when to think and when to decide. When you make decisions you need to stick with them through adversity if you are sure they are right, and to see them through. People like continuity. If at some point you conclude that you were wrong, you need to be big enough to change and to explain why. The best solution is to make the right decisions! It is more important to make good decisions than fast decisions.
Leadership is a combination of tangible and intangible skills such as wisdom, integrity and presence, that can be developed by personal evaluation and insight and the desire to grow. The definition of leadership depends upon individuals in particular situations or circumstances. What makes a great leader in one context may not in another. A great leader knows his or her strengths and weaknesses, exhibits wise judgment and a steady hand and is able to guide employees towards reaching personal and professional success.
There’s no such thing as a fleeting cause célèbre for Jolie; since joining forces with the UN’s refugee agency in 2001, first as a goodwill ambassador and now as special envoy, she’s undertaken 50 field missions to countries including Iraq, Syria, and Pakistan. Her decision to explain her preemptive double mastectomy in a New York Times editorial, though controversial in some health circles, underscored her willingness to foster hard conversations by taking a public stand. “Angelina Jolie represents a new type of leadership in the 21st century,” says U.K. Foreign Secretary William Hague, who has worked with Jolie on efforts to end a plague of rape in war-torn regions. “Her strength lies in the fact that she is able to influence governments and move public opinion at the same time.” That Jolie chooses to use her global influence to highlight neglected human rights and humanitarian issues, adds Hague, “is in keeping with the finest traditions of leadership.”
Honest – Wise leaders are not afraid of communicating the truth to their people. Honesty is about being truthful, having integrity, and building trust. Honesty leads to better more productive relationships.
Mark Steines, actor and former host of Entertainment Tonight, has this to say about being polite. “Growing up in Dubuque, Iowa, things like manners and kindness were instilled into me at a young age. When my career brought me to Hollywood, I saw various levels of narcissism and unethical, mean-spirited people. The industry is tough and it challenges your moral compass. It is easy to to turn into something ugly and ungrateful. It takes a lot of work to stay kind, genuine and true but it is well worth it.”
Dress the part. If you walk into an office in a suit and tie, constantly glancing at your watch, people are going to assume you’re waiting for some schmuck who’s late for a business meeting. Walk into an office in a t-shirt and baseball cap and people will start wanting to know where their pizza is. If you want to lead, you gotta look the part.
Only about 10% of people have this quality of future-orientation. This small percentage includes all the movers, shakers, entrepreneurs, business builders, top salespeople, artists, musicians, and creators of all kinds.
Start a Student Club or Organization – if there isn’t a club you aren’t interested in joining, why not start a new one? You can be the president. You will learn how to handle a group of people to accomplish certain goals or tasks.
Envisioning means creating, establishing and communicating a clear,  concise, and compelling vision of what value the organization provides  to its customers and to its other stakeholders, and delineates the  organization’s position, or intended position, in the market.
Finally, accept that we all make mistakes. Nobody is perfect. When you do, try to learn the lessons, but don’t be destabilised. Someone told me once: “don’t chew the cud”. Keep moving forward, be resilient, remember that things will get better. And smile.

Rarely will someone offer to be your mentor – you’ll likely have to do the courting. It may be someone in your business area, but a great mentor relationship doesn’t necessarily need to be in your same industry.
Becoming a great leader is within your reach. Even some simple things like providing cupcakes or beers on Fridays can make the world of difference. An added perk is that team members are likely to work harder and do overtime when needed if they’re happy and appreciated.
No matter the situation, showing the person you are working with that you are on the same team can go a long way. If they come to you with an issue, take a moment to see things from their point of view. Maybe they have someone above them breathing down their neck. Maybe they have a lot on their plate. There is a reason why they are coming to you with a certain energy. The key is to meet them where they are, and then position yourself as a resource–not an enemy. If someone is in a stressful situation, or carrying a lot of anxiety, trying to strong-arm them will do nothing but make things worse.
What most people do: Wing it. They make a list of the reasons why they should get a raise — why they DESERVE it — and then they practice what they’re going to say in their heads a few times. They think the fact that they’ve done great work will be enough.
In recent years, considerable evidence has emerged that the strongest organisations and groups tend to permit and actively encourage each member of the group or organisation to take the lead at the appropriate point. Organisations and families with particularly controlling leaders, by contrast, tend to be fairly dysfunctional.

Successful men are different. They set goals and they achieve them. So how does a man become a true success? What habits and traits do these men have that help them reach that place that makes them highly successful? Compulsiveness. Leaders were found to be controlled and very precise in their social interactions. Overall, they were very protective of their integrity and reputation and consequently tended to be socially aware and careful, abundant in foresight, and very careful when making decisions or determining specific actions.
Reward your hard workers with prizes. A prize, whether it’s the latest technological gadget or just a pair of free movie tickets, can give your employees the incentive they need to work hard, and will make them think you’re a cool boss.
Unlike management, leadership cannot be taught, although it may be learned and enhanced through coaching or mentoring. Someone with great leadership skills today is Bill Gates who, despite early failures, with continued passion and innovation has driven Microsoft and the software industry to success.

Although some individuals are naturally strong communicators or strategic thinkers, leaders are mostly made and not born. Developing as a leader takes time and experience, and it usually involves making ample mistakes. Libraries are filled with books about leading, but the only way to truly learn to lead is to engage in doing so. ​Training programs, books and other materials can be valuable supporting tools, but learning to lead is a full contact activity.
